Stars prove points on windy Monday

Trammers loves an epic point and Monday's action at the US Open showcased three tasty morsels.

First up in the swirling New York wind was hot favourite Novak Djokovic's straight-sets win against tricky Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgolopov.

The final result - 7-6 6-4 6-2 - seems straightforward enough but the first set and its tie-breaker in particular were very, very close.

Nole admitted that he was "confused" by his notoriously awkward opponent - and it showed as, while the Serb won it 16-14, he could not handle some of the A-Dog's shots.

The Ukrainian may have won this manic point, but Nole showed why he is number one by laughing it off and closing out the set, before romping through the next two.

The always-entertaining Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga, meanwhile, was taken all the way by Mardy Fish, coming back from two sets to one down to win 6-4 6-7 3-6 6-4 6-2.

And he really turned it on at the start of the fifth, winning this rally to go three break points up and ultimately take charge of the final set.

Strangely for a man renowned for showing a bit of flesh, Tsonga had a modest moment in the match as he ordered a gaggle of ball-boys to shield his manhood as he took a Gaga-esque costume change earlier in the match.

Ooh la la...

Back to the tennis, and there was another killer point on Monday, this time in the first of the two evening matches in the singles draw.

Caroline Wozniacki deserved to win it for her seemingly impossible shot into the corner, even if the victorious smash was straightforward.

She lost that set but went on to win the match against Svetlana Kuznetsova in a fashion that raises question marks about the question marks over her ability in Slams.

Quote of the day: "There is something in the mentality that obviously helps us to be here, helped us to be successful in what we do. The past and the life story that we have behind us ... because we have all experienced the war, we have all experienced the tough times back home, struggles to have the right conditions to become a professional player. In the end, those things, when you turn around, make you appreciate life much more. So I think that's an advantage of the mentality" - Djokovic, never one to shy from nationalist sentiment, misses the point, which is that Balkan folk are just good at tennis.

Upset of the day: Technically it was an upset, but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a better player than Mardy Fish, seedings notwithstanding.

Looking ahead: Andy Murray has a possible banana-skin in Donald Young. If the Murray that smashed Feliciano Lopez turns up, Young hasn't got a prayer; if the Murray that needed five sets to dispose of Robin Haase shows, he has every chance...
