  • British 400m star Christine Ohuruogu funds young athletes with her own money, UK Athletics performance director Neil Black has revealed.

Former Olympic gold medallist Ohuruogu, 29, is a double world champion but shuns the limelight relative to her contemporaries.

Instead the East Londoner prefers to visit local schools and colleges to promote sports among children – but that’s not all she does, it emerged.

“She doesn’t tell anyone but Chrissie pays for people to go training and to events. She’s putting huge amounts back into the sport,” Black was quoted as saying in the Daily Express.

  • Is this the most violent sport in the world?

Until we came across the amazing video above by film-maker David Battistella, we here at World of Sport had never heard of 'Calcio Storico.'

However, after watching the footage, we are already checking flight prices to Florence so we can see this event in person.

Calcio Storico translates as 'historic football' and is also sometimes referred to as 'Calcio Fiorentino' (Florence football) as it is now only played in the city of Florence.

There it takes place every summer in the city's Pizza Santa Croce but it origins can be traced back all the way to the 16th century when it was a sport played

  • Cheerleader sues NFL side over £3-an-hour wages

An Oakland Raiders cheerleader sued the NFL franchise on Wednesday on behalf of current and former members of the Raiderettes, saying the team broke California labour laws by failing to pay them adequately or on time.

Lacy T., who worked as a Raiderette for the 2013-2014 season, said in her Alameda County Superior Court lawsuit that the Raiders pay cheerleaders only $1,250 for an entire season and withhold wages until the end of the season.

She is seeking class-action status for her lawsuit, which seeks unpaid wages and damages for herself and other current and past cheerleaders.

  • One Direction star Louis to make Doncaster debut

When Doncaster Rovers announced the signing of One Direction star Louis Tomlinson last summer it seemed a nice little publicity stunt and everybody got on with their lives thinking we would never actually see him wearing the club's red and white shirt in an official match.

However, it would seem that the 22-year-old is serious about getting on the pitch for Donny and his debut has even been pencilled in for next month.

Okay so it is only a reserve match, but we suspect Doncaster's management will be taking a key look at their local hero – knowing that if he impresses and they can get him in

  • Hearing impaired twin’s lovely letter to NFL star

Riley with her twin sister Erin (@JakeIsMobile)

Derrick Coleman is a running-back with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL and will be heading to the Super Bowl with his team in less than two weeks.

However the most remarkable thing about Coleman's story is that he has been deaf since he was three years-old.

In a sport that relies so much on communication and designed plays this is quite an achievement.

Coleman is the first deaf player in the NFL's history and his inspiring story was told in an advertisement for Duracell that has been widely acclaimed since its release earlier this month.

    You can watch it below:

  • ‘Real-life sting’ sees bookies hit for millions

    Barney Curley (Imago)

Bookmakers seem to have been hit by a 'real-life sting' after legendary gambler and ex-trainer Barney Curley appeared to pull off an outrageous betting coup on Tuesday.

Social media was abuzz when four horses in low-key races were massively backed during the day – in some cases going from double figure odds to odds-on - and people started to piece together the common link.

That link was ex-trainer Curley. He had connection to the four horses, who all went on to win, despite having gone on a combined losing run of 47 races.

The bookies had been hit by a similar sting from Curley in 2010 – then

  • You could be mistaken for thinking the drivers of this rally car had spotted a giant, burning wicker man in the distance.

But no, they were just part terrified, part exhilarated by their exploits at the Killarney Rally in the Republic of Ireland.

Initially they appear in control of the situation but, after almost spinning off the road before nearly colliding with a rival car, both driver and navigator start yelping like terrified children.

"Jesus Christ! F****** hell! Christ noooo!" they are heard to scream.

Thankfully there was no harm, and the two are heard cackling with laughter after

  • ‘Drunk’ ice hockey goalie still gets the job done

An amateur ice hockey match in the Czech Republic became big news when an apparently drunk goalie took to the ice - and a video of him doing so went viral across the internet.

Our man between the sticks was seen wobbling all over the place and indeed, if he didn't have the goal right there to lean on, then he might have landed on his bottom on more than the two occasions he did so in the short clip.

However, when called into duty, he somehow managed to focus the mind and made a superb save.

It works for this guy, but the last thing we would want to do here at World of Sport is encourage you
