Lionel Messi's home city of Rosario is to build a museum in honour of the Barcelona superstar.

"Messi's family have committed to providing unique objects for the museum," the town's mayor, Monica Fein told AFP.

"It will be a sports museum where Leo Messi will be the central figure."

Hermes Binner, who is both a former governor of the Sante Fe province and mayor of Rosario, said he hoped the museum would be up and running quickly.

"I think the Messi museum will be finished within two years," he said.

Messi will be the focus of the museum but other sports stars from the city – such as Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria – will also be featured.

An area of 80 acres - that was formally an army base - in the south of the city has already been purchased for the museum. Other buildings will also be built in the area thanks to a mixture of public and private funding.

Messi was on the books of Rosario club Newell's Old Boys before moving to Barcelona as a 12-year-old.
