Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was forced to miss matches after injuring his back greeting a small child at a shopping mall.
The 30-year-old, who has been picked as an All-Star on four occasions in his career, was out in Tampa ahead of a Red Sox clash against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Boston Globe newspaper report that he was grabbing a cup of coffee when he bent over to say hello to a child, only to feel his lower back lock up as he did so.
The strangest aspect of the injury was that Gonzalez had never experienced any kind of back problem in his career before.
"I have no idea how it happened," said Gonzalez. "It was something I've done a million times."
Despite the fact that most non-sportsmen would manage to bend down and say hello to a small child, the incident left Gonzalez with back spasms and it took two matches before he could reclaim his place in the Red Sox line-up.
But whether Gonzalez will be high-fiving any more young fans remains to be seen.
In either case, a place on our list of top sporting ailments surely awaits...
