Blundering Premier League ‘announces’ Mourinho’s Chelsea comeback

Jose Mourinho is widely expected to return as Chelsea manager in the next few days after leaving Real Madrid.

So widely expected, in fact, that some media have already written their 'Jose's Back!' pieces, all ready to publish as soon as the news becomes official.

Nothing wrong with that - it's been done for years - but you do have to make sure no itchy trigger finger puts the story live too early.

Enter the Premier League, who have 'announced' Mourinho's appointment on their official website.

The story, which has now been removed, is dated Monday 3 June and has 'x's where the length of his contract should be.

It reads:

Jose Mourinho has returned to Stamford Bridge after agreeing to take over as Chelsea manager for the second time.

The 50-year-old Portuguese, who guided Chelsea to back-to-back Barclays Premier League titles in his first two seasons in charge, returns to the west London club after an absence of almost six-years.

While this gaffe is clearly the result of a technical glitch or good old human error, it does rather suggest that Chelsea will confirm The Special One's return to Stamford Bridge on Monday.

Mourinho took charge of his final game as Real Madrid boss on Saturday, beating Osasuna 4-2.

He is expected to travel to London on Sunday ahead of his presentation next week.

The perils of using pre-written stories were seen in a rather more serious context in 2011, when the Daily Mail mistakenly published a story reporting that Amanda Knox had failed in a bid to overturn her conviction for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher.

In fact, Ms Knox and her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito's appeal had been upheld.

**UPDATE** The Premier League has now apologised to Chelsea, saying: "It was a publishing error. We took it down as soon as we were notified of it, and we've spoken to and apologised to Chelsea. We have no prior knowledge of any movement or any announcement."
