Defender scores outrageous goal from well inside own half

Scoring from 70 yards is a feat that has proved beyond some of the very best players in the history of football – but an unheralded 20-year-old centre-back managed to do just that in a friendly this week.

Martin Hinteregger, who plays for Red Bull Salzburg, is hardly known for his prowess in front of goal but showed an opportunistic streak when scoring one of the more remarkable goals you will see this year.

In a 3-1 win for his side against German club Schalke on Thursday, Hinteregger allowed a pass from goalkeeper Alexander Walke to roll under his boot, spun away from his man and then snuck a peek upfield.

He spotted Schalke keeper Timo Hildebrand off his line and unleashed a frankly outrageous effort from 70 yards that soared over the Germany international and landed square between the posts.

Hinteregger was immediately swamped by his team-mates and then made his way to the sidelines to hug sub keeper Alexander Walke – for good reason.

“Alex said he knows the goalie – he knows that he is often very far out,” Hinteregger said. “After that, I kept it simple.”

That’s one way of putting it.
