But those calendars have always come from non-league football sides staving off the administrators or university hockey teams in need of new sticks.
Now, however, a Premier League football team has got in on the act: Everton.
The Toffees have just announced a charity calendar for 2013 - dubbed '12 shades of Blue' - that features a dozen of the club's stars in varying states of undress, including goalkeeper Tim Howard, new signing Kevin Mirallas, mop-haired striker Marouane Fellaini and club skipper Phil Neville, whose cheese-grating abs grace the cover.
Howard in particular seems to have enjoyed posing greatly.
"Shooting the calendar was lots of fun and myself and the other boys were happy to help out," said the American goalie.
"It's a great feeling to do something to help other people and I hope sales of the calendar raise a good amount for the charity."
The good cause that is the beneficiary of all this gratuitous nudity is the official club charity, Everton in the Community, which came up with the idea of the calendar to celebrate a quarter of a century of doing good works for the people of Merseyside.
The calendar is released on 22 November and will cost £10; it can be pre-ordered at www.evertonfc.com/12shades.
