We frequently hear about how a high-profile celebrity has a particular fancy for a sports star, and Hollywood actress Kim Cattrall is the latest to show her colours.

The Sex and The City star, who plays nymphomaniac Samantha in the chick show, has tweeted of her, shall we say, admiration, for Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard.

Cattrall, who has been spotted several times watching the Reds at Anfield and was present for her favourite team's crushing win in the Merseyside derby, was tweeting her feelings.

It came about as she posted a photo of Gerrard walking off the field accompanied - rather closely - by physio Chris Morgan, who had his arm around the midfielder's waist.

All entirely professional, of course, and there was very little to it, but that gave the actress a chance to reveal her affection for Gerrard.

Morgan, the physio himself, was alerted to the tweet, and replied to her saying 'Haha!'.

Gerrard is happily married to Alex Curran, of course, the pair having tied the knot back in 2007 - but it is not the only case of celebrity-sport star flirting on social media.

Pop star Lily Allen is famously a huge fan of England cricketer Graham Onions and is not averse to former all-rounder Andrew Flintoff either.

The 24-year-old Tweeted back in 2009: "I think I fancy Graham Onions more than Freddie now. I've heard he goes for days...either three or five...hehe."

Later she added: "Is Onions married? Anyone?"

Teen tennis sensation Eugenie Bouchard's mutual attraction with Justin Bieber, meanwhile, gained considerable traction on Twitter during the Australian Open in recent weeks. Bouchard revealed in a very awkward post-match interview that she would like to date the musician, before Bieber sent her a simple good luck message for her next match. And so it went.

Perhaps most randomly, French footballer Yoann Gourcuff was named 100th in celebrity magazine Heat's list of their 100 sexiest male celebrities in January 2009.

Who says that Twitter and other social media has not contributed to the quality of society?
