Lionel Messi scored two more goals on Sunday night against Atletico Madrid, taking his 2012 tally to a frankly absurd 90.

It is slightly unfair to compare his personal exploits to that of one particular team, but hey - that doesn't mean it isn't fun.

And legendary club Liverpool are the latest team the Argentine maestro has overtaken.

Messi and Liverpool both went into the weekend on 88 goals for the calendar year, but while Messi lit up the Camp Nou once again, Liverpool fell to a 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa.

Messi is of course only one man, and to put the whole thing into context, Liverpool have used 38 different players across all competitions this year.

To be fair to Liverpool, though, Messi has played 68 games in 2012, while Liverpool have only had 57 fixtures.

Also, they have both won the same number of trophies this calendar year — one — with Messi winning the Copa del Rey and Liverpool tasting glory in the Carling Cup.

The Reds also managed to score six goals in one match (against Brighton in the FA Cup in February) while the best Messi could manage was a 'paltry' five in a Champions League last-16 clash against Bayer Leverkusen.

Liverpool also have three games left this season - they face Fulham on Saturday before festive trips to Stoke City and Queens Park Rangers - giving them a great chance of overtaking Messi.

Messi, on the other hand, has only one more match - away at Real Valladolid - as he tries to add to his astonishing haul which is being called a world record despite a counter claim in Zambia.

Messi has also scored more league goals this year than French champions Montpellier (58 to 57) and considerably more than Liverpool's record £35 million signing Andy Carroll (7).

Italian giants AC Milan (91) needed four goals this weekend against Pescara to overtake Messi and with a tricky trip to Roma their only remaining game of 2012, who's to say the already great Argentine won't pass them too?
