A robber in the United States gave police an unlikely clue as to his identity when cheering his favourite sports team as he fled the scene of his crime.

A bearded man, wearing thick glasses, walked into a bank in St Louis, Missouri on Friday and handed over a note to the teller that demanded money be handed over.

Though the suspect did not reveal a weapon at the First Bank branch, he made away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

However, his heist was not complete until the robber shouted "Go Cards!" in support of local baseball side St Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals play their home games at Busch Stadium, 20 miles north of the bank, and are currently in contention to reach the World Series for the second year in a row.

So if they do battle to retain their crown, and a bearded fan starts showering his fellow spectators with cash, the police may be best advised to move in.
