Is this the worst football team ever? The
Blacksmith's Arms fear they could well be if they lose again on Saturday.
The sorry team's record this season reads
like this: played 24, lost 24. Goals for: five, goals against: 337.
That is a staggering average of 14 goals
conceded per game. And one of those five in their favour was an own-goal.
Needless to say, the team prop up the
bottom of the WJ Harrison Lincoln League, having recorded a goal difference of
minus 269 in their 19 league outings.
In the five cup ties they have played,
unfortunate keeper Tim Allen has had to pick the ball out of the net 63 times
while their strike force failed to register a single goal at the other end.
They have been beaten 27-0 on two
Pub landlady and club secretary Julz Dixon said
in the Daily Mirror: "If we continue like this we're heading for the
Guinness Book of Records as the worst team there's ever been.
"We know we're rubbish but I can't
fault the attitude of the players - they are a great bunch.
"We keep getting beat but we've been
playing a bit better lately. Rather than losing by 20 goals, it's now just five
Keeper Allen added: "It gets a bit
sickening when you're getting beat 27-0, so I had a go outfield.
"Unfortunately, our reserve keeper got
injured so I was put back between the sticks. There was no escape.
"We don't enjoy losing and it's hard
work. In some games I have to try to save 40 or 50 shots."
There are no plans to disband the team.
