Real Madrid stunned 1-0 by CSKA Moscow

Julen Lopetegui paid the price for fielding a much-changed Real Madrid side as Nikola Vlasic's early strike earned CSKA Moscow a shock 1-0 victory in Moscow.

Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Gareth Bale and Isco were all rested for the trip to Moscow and Lopetegui gave a rare start for youngster Sergio Reguilon at left-back.

But they started poorly and an error from Toni Kroos gave the home side a shock lead after just 66 seconds, with Nikola Vlasic, on loan from Everton, smartly finishing past Keylor Navas.

After a slow start, Real Madrid found their feet and had a number of opportunities to equalise.

Casemiro was one of the biggest threats for Madrid in the first half and the Brazilian was unfortunate to see his long-range effort bounce back off the post.

Shortly before half time, Karim Benzema was denied by the woodwork when his header crashed against the crossbar.

Lopetegui sent on Luka Modric and Mariano Diaz in the second half in an attempt to find an equaliser, but the Champions League holders struggled to truly test Igor Akinfeev in the CSKA goal.

Kroos and Modric both had decent chances to level late on, while Mariano sent a bullet header onto the post in the dying seconds before CSKA goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was sent off, but the Russian underdogs held on for a famous victory.
