  • Live Commentary

    • - Don't forget you can watch highlights of this match at 00:01 (UK only).
    • 90+4' There's the final whistle, and United ease to victory - they maintain their five-point lead atop the Premier League!
    • 90+3' Both sides are seemingly content to play out time as the fans vacate their seats en masse.
    • 90+1' It's just not happening for Berbatov! Evra finds him with a clipped cross, but the Bulgarian makes a right mess of his attempted overhead kick.
    • 90' There will be three minutes of stoppage time to play.
    • 89' ROONEY!!! Denied magnificently by Friedel!! He hits a first-time half-volley from 25 yards and the keeper leaps to his left to push it away!
    • 89' Young gets two chances to cross but both times it is headed away... Villa running out of time.
    • 88' Agbonlahor crosses low from the right, Ferdinand clears and slices it out for a corner - Young to take...
    • 87' Rooney tries to complete his hat-trick but snatches at a shot from the edge of the box and wallops it high over the top!
    • 86' Agbonlahor heads it into the back of O'Shea's arm and wants a penalty... O'Shea wasn't even looking so it's unlikely it was deliberate.
    • 84' SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOUR!! Berbatov's blocked shot ricochets to Nani, whose diagonal shot is magnificently saved by Friedel - but the rebound falls to Berbatov who somehow skies it!
    • 83' Van der Sar comes right to the edge of the box and NEARLY handles outside the area. Just inside...
    • 82' Nani tricks his way past Collins as he cuts inside from the left, but he cannot decide whether to pass or shoot and hits the ball straight into Friedel.
    • 81' You know I said it was a rare piece of bad control by Giggs earlier? Well, he's done it again.
    • 80' Villa change: Nigel Reo-Coker comes on for Stewart Downing.
    • 80' Agbonlahor looks to put Van de Sar under pressure as he comes out to collect a long ball forwards... but the keeper calmly lets the ball roll through his legs and out for a goal kick.
    • 78' NANI!! Cuts inside onto his left foot and has another shot - high and wide. He's certainly not afraid to have a go, is he?
    • 77' Young crosses from the left and Bent rises to meet it. Evra does enough to put him off and Bent heads over.
    • 76' Rooney is released through the middle by O'Shea and this is a great chance for a hat-trick... his touch is not great and Dunne slides in with a brilliant challenge! Should really have been Rooney's third.
    • 75' Aston Villa: Gabriel Agbonlahor replaces the clearly peeved Stiliyan Petrov, who gets a talking-to from Gerard Houllier following his show of dissent - shaking his head all the way off.
    • 74' Petrov gives it away to Anderson who plays it wide to Giggs... the cross comes in for Berbatov who stretches but cannot reach it!
    • 74' Darren Bent is limping while Nani has come to the sidelines for some running repairs. Villa preparing for a change.
    • 73' Ashley Young comes back from an offside position to collect the ball, and the linesman's flag duly goes up. It's no good spitting on the ground, young man.
    • 72' Nani beats Clark for pace but the Villa man drags him down cynically - no yellow card, surprisingly.
    • 71' Ashley Young hits the bar!! John O'Shea stands off him, so he cuts inside and curls a fine shot onto the top of the woodwork! Van der Sar hardly moved...
    • 70' Aston Villa: Marc Albrighton is replaced by Emile Heskey, who gets a smattering of boos as a former Liverpool player.
    • 69' Nani has Carrick in support to his right, but goes for goal and fires a long-range shot down the throat of Friedel.
    • 68' Giggs jinks past two challenges but rather runs out of steam, and by the time he stands up a little diagonal cross there are plenty of Villa defenders back.
    • 67' Gerard Houllier looks on in pensive fashion, but not necessarily in the style of a man with a masterplan.
    • 66' Downing delivers a Villa corner to Dunne at the back post, who is unmarked... his header just grazes the bar on its way over!
    • 66' 'Giggs will tear you apart' rings around Old Trafford. So much better than the Graeme Swann version, it hardly needs saying...
    • 65' Giggs cuts inside from the right and hits a powerful shot straight into the body of a defender. United going for the kill here.
    • 63' GOAL!! VIDIC!! United restore their two-goal cushion! A corner is cleared but the defender stays forward. He exchanges passes with Rooney and thumps the ball past Friedel through a crowd of defenders!
    • 63' Nani rolls the corner to the edge of the box where Anderson is arriving, but his shot is quickly blocked.
    • 62' Rooney digs out a cross from the left but it is headed behind for a corner...
    • 62' Great run from Giggs, who plays a give-and-go to Rooney who returns the pass with a beautiful backheel - but Giggs overruns it and his attempted backheel cannot find Berbatov.
    • 61' A definite air of anxiety around Old Trafford. This wouldn't be the first time United have let a winning position slip this season...
    • 60' Carrick robs Petrov and decides to go for goal, but he puts the ball into orbit. Not his finest effort.
    • 59' First chance, first goal for Villa, and this game is back on!
    • 58' GOAL!! DARREN BENT!! VILLA ARE BACK IN IT!! Ashley Young releases Downing down the right, and he rolls a perfect ball into the path of Bent who beats Van der Sar from close range!
    • 58' Evra works really hard to maintain possession under pressure from two opponents... but he is forced backwards into his own half.
    • 58' A rare miscontrol by Ryan Giggs, as the ball squirts off his thigh and out for a throw.
    • 57' ...Ashley Young goes for goal but tries to get the ball up and down instead of just whacking it, and the ball curls well over.
    • 56' O'Shea impedes Albrighton and Villa have a free-kick just outside the United box - at last, a chance for the visitors...
    • 55' Villa are still looking OK on the ball, but the sad reality is they have created next to nothing at the business end of the pitch.
    • 54' Walker makes a positive run down the right channel for Villa but he runs into Evra and loses possession.
    • 53' Through ball down the middle for Giggs to chase, but he just cannot catch up with it and Friedel claims.
    • 51' Terrible corner by Nani, scooped away by Bent at the near post...
    • 50' Superb work by Giggs to dispossess Young in the left-back position and play a calm pass to Evra... from the United attack, Nani wins a corner as his cross is deflected behind.
    • 49' Rooney looks for Giggs on the left, but he strays offside. He tried to halt his run so must have known he was close, but that doesn't stop him arguing.
    • 48' Bent goes down off the ball in the box after a tangle with Evra - Villa want a penalty but again Chris Foy says no foul. Probably the right decision again.
    • 47' Nani stands up a cross from the right that Dunne heads away, then the Irishman does well to muscle Anderson off the ball.
    • 46' Nearly another early goal as Carrick feeds Nani, and Dunne does well to block the Portuguese!
    • 46' The second half is under way, with no further personnel changes. United looking comfortable so far, and they kick off playing from right to left as we see it.
    • 45+2' That's the end of a first half bookended by two fine Wayne Rooney goals - that's more than he has scored in open play since March last year.
    • 45+1' GOAL!!! WAYNE ROONEY AGAIN!! Nani crosses magnificently from the right flank, spotting Rooney's run, and the striker gets beyond Collins to finish from close range!
    • 45' Into the dying embers of the first half - Anderson hits a high cross into the box, and Berbatov leaps high again to head it down, but Rooney does not react quickly enough and Villa clear.
    • 44' Villa free-kick on the right, played in by Downing, but the ball is scrambled away and Dunne is guilty of a foul as the ball comes back in.
    • 43' Albrighton looks to make progress down the Villa right but takes a very heavy touch and sends the ball out for a throw.
    • 42' Berbatov sprints beyond Walker and looks for a target in the middle... he clips it towards Rooney but Friedel catches it. Great turn of pace from Berbatov.
    • 41' Walker gets beyond Evra and finds Downing whose attempted shot is charged down at source by Anderson.
    • 40' Nani crosses diagonally towards Berbatov at the back post... he rises high but heads the ball over! He could either have gone for goal or squared it for Rooney, but in the end did neither.
    • 38' Collins makes another important header as Giggs clips a cross towards Berbatov.
    • 37' Giggs lobs a superb pass inside from the left for Evra to chase, who races inside the box and shoots!! Friedel saves low and spills it, but Berbatov has run past the ball and Villa scramble it away.
    • 36' Great control by Rooney to pluck the ball out of the air, but Collins reacts with real alertness to deny him.
    • 35' Fletcher does not seem to be in any real discomfort, but he may need stitches on that cut.
    • 34' Manchester United: Darren Fletcher's night is over thanks to that cut, and he is replaced by Anderson.
    • 32' Darren Fletcher has a facial injury and is receiving treatment - he is bleeding from above the left eye and is complaining that he cannot see properly.
    • 31' Rooney clips a diagonal ball towards Berbatov, but it would have had to be absolutely perfect to find the Bulgarian - and it isn't.
    • 30' GIGGS!! He cuts inside from the right, beats Collins with a faked shot, then hits a low right-foot effort towards the near post but Friedel is sharply down to his right and saves.
    • 29' Patient move from Villa, but Makoun spoils it with a lofted pass that can only really have been intended for Edwin van der Sar. Bizarre.
    • 28' Bent jumped with Vidic and is adjudged to have impeded the Serb. Not sure how serious the contact really was there...
    • 27' Apart from the goal, Villa have done pretty well so far. They are not being overwhelmed by any means.
    • 26' Neat triangles from United before Carrick tries to find the marauding Evra down the left… the pass does not reach its intended target.
    • 25' Clark challenges Nani, who goes down but does not win a free-kick. The winger doesn't help himself...
    • 24' Downing cuts inside from the right and hits a left-foot shot into Evra, and the ball runs away for a throw.
    • 23' The corner results in a few bodies going to ground, but Villa are able to clear and there is no serious penalty claim.
    • 22' GOOD SAVE FRIEDEL!! A Rooney pass ricochets off Collins into the path of Nani, whose powerful first-time shot is parried by Friedel diving to his left!
    • 21' Villa win a corner on their right - it's an outswinger by Young that Dunne meets, but he cannot make proper contact with the header.
    • 19' Villa race down the other end and Bent hits a shot straight into the guts of Van der Sar. Nani is hobbling again.
    • 18' Nani collects a through-ball inside the box and Dunne uses a shoulder to nudge him aside - Nani goes down theatrically but referee Chris Foy says no penalty! Rightly so.
    • 17' Berbatov closes Friedel down and the keeper is forced to slice the ball hurriedly out of play.
    • 16' 39-year-old Brad Friedel becomes Villa's oldest ever player tonight - he could have wished for a better start...
    • 15' Fabio Capello is sitting next to Mick McCarthy tonight - McCarthy's Wolves play United on Saturday.
    • 14' Good spell of possession for Villa... a looping Young cross is helped on by Downing, then Bent swings a left boot at it, but he is offside.
    • 13' Rare loss of composure as O'Shea puts the ball out unnecessarily for a Villa throw inside the United half.
    • 12' Plenty of goals elsewhere, too; click here for the latest.
    • 11' United work the ball intricately among themselves but Villa keep their discipline and Petrov nicks it off Giggs.
    • 10' Half-chance for Bent as he gets away from Ferdinand and scuffs a shot straight to Van der Sar. Nani is back up and moving OK.
    • 10' Rooney and Nani get in each other's way at the edge of the box, and the latter goes down injured. Did he jar his knee there?
    • 9' Rooney crosses from the right to Berbatov at the back post, but the Bulgarian's header is blocked by Walker.
    • 8' Villa are working hard and closing down from the front...
    • 7' Walker plays it down the right flank then hits the deck, appealing for a free-kick as he does so. Nothing doing.
    • 6' Fletcher spreads it down the right wing for Berbatov who controls, then works it to the edge of the box for Nani, who jinks into half a yard of space but leathered a left-foot shot high over the bar.
    • 6' Better from Dunne, as he nicks a Rooney pass intended for Berbatov.
    • 5' Rooney spins past Dunne and is fouled by Dunne as he does so. United take the free-kick quickly but Makoun quickly intercepts.
    • 4' Villa win a throw well forward down their left.. they pass it backwards, just looking to settle.
    • 3' Gerard Houllier masterminded some good wins over United as Liverpool manager, but will have to pull off something amazing if Villa are to overcome this early deficit.
    • 2' Fantastic goal by Wayne Rooney - that is the sort of play United have been missing from him this season. Poor Richard Dunne got caught out badly there, though.
    • 1' GOAL!! WAYNE ROONEY!!! 48 SECONDS!!! Van der Sar punts it long downfield, Rooney sprints beyond Dunne, controls and smashes a dipping volley past Friedel from the edge of the box!!
    • 1' And off we go! Villa kick off, playing from right to left as we see it. They are all in black - United in red, white and black as usual.
    • 19:56 To alexandera - yes, those line-ups are official and Makoun plays. And right on cue, the teams emerge to that ludicrously bombastic Old Trafford fanfare.
    • 19:55 Darren Bent has scored two goals in fou Premier League visits to Old Trafford – netting in Tottenham’s 5-2 defeat (April 2009) and Sunderland’s 2-2 draw (October 2009). On both occasions he scored the opening goal.
    • 19:50 There are four Premier League games tonight, of which two are under way and we already have a goal! Premier League scores and scorers
    • 19:45 Manchester United also ring the changes after their FA Cup scare against Southampton. Rio Ferdinand returns from a groin injury, while Nani, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov feature further forward.
    • 19:40 So, a closer look at the teams... Gabriel Agbonlahor's reward for scoring his first goal of the season is to be dropped - Marc Albrighton replaces him from the team that won at Wigan last week. A more familiar look to the team after a much-changed side beat Blackburn in the Cup.
