While the home side were not at their best, credit must go to Midtjylland who did everything they could to make life difficult for Gasperini's troops. They opened the scoring through Scholz in the first half, with his half volley sailing into the top corner past Sportiello. After wasting several opportunities, Atalanta eventually found an equaliser when Romero headed home, but they could not find another goal that would have helped them move closer to the knockout stages of the competition.
