    Argentina edge out Germany

Gonzalo Higuain's late first half strike was enough to secure Diego Maradona's Argentina an edgy 1-0 victory away to Germany in Munich. More

    Time:90'
    • Germany
    • Argentina
    • 90+3 And that's it from Munich - Argentina prevail, just about. Stay here for the full report.
    • 90' Argentina play some keep ball and that looks to be that.
    • 89' Ballack leads a late charge forward but his cross is over hit.
    • 87' Germany pour forward for what could be the last corner of the game but Veron clears.
    • 85 Burdisso almost dispatches Veron's free-kick at the near post, but, side-on to the ball, he miss-times his attempt at a deft flick and Adler collects. That would have sown it up.
    • 83' OOHHHH!! Cacau exchanges passes with Gomez before thudding a volley over the bar of Romero. Chance.
    • 81' The South American's are slowly draining the life out of this one.
    • 80' Maradona continues to bark orders from the touchline - he is far from happy with Cacau's late challenge on Mascherano.
    • 79' Lahm is the latest player in the referee's notebook - Gutierrez the victim this time.
    • 78' Cacau stings the palms of Romero from distance.
    • 76' Boateng and Ballack exchange over hit crosses for the home side - symptomatic of a disappointing performance.
    • 74' The German machine begins to turn the screw. Schweinsteiger fires wildly over from outside the box but the pressure is mounting.
    • 72' Germany put a few decent passes together and Lahm crosses for Ballack. The Chelsea midfielder - arching his head back - can only head wide from the penalty spot.
    • 70' Messi's frustrations boil over and he is booked for a hack on Lahm. This game has really lost any sense of direction - if it isn't a substitution, it is a free-kick.
    • 69' Now Ballack cynically hacks the playmaker down and he is lucky not to be booked.
    • 68' A combination of Lahm and Tasci stop a marauding Messi. Free-kick. By hook or by crook they have had the Barcelona playmaker well shackled tonight.
    • 67' Despite lacking genuine creativity, the hosts have their visitors under intense pressure.
    • 66' Joachim Loew prepares another couple of substitutions as Schweinsteiger delivers yet another poor corner.
    • 64' The hosts break to win a corner but the delivery from Ozil is poor. His wildly over hit kick goes out for a throw.
    • 62' The goal-scorer is off for Tevez.
    • 61' But they make a hash of it - a training ground one gone well and truly wrong there.
    • 59' Mascherano cleans out Ozil on the edge of the box and a clutch of German players stand over the free-kick.
    • 58' Messi has been pretty much anonymous thus far. Very disappointing.
    • 56' Germany with more of the ball and the territorial advantage but no clear cut chances as of yet.
    • 54' Klose's is replaced by Gomez for the Germans and the visitors are forced into an early second half change - Heinze is off injured to be replaced by Rodriguez.
    • 52' Poor set-piece from the home side. The ball is swept back into the box but Ballack heads over.
    • 51' The hosts break and, having latched onto a delightful Muller ball, Podolski's goal bound effort is charged down by Gutierrez. Corner.
    • 50' Messi shows some quick feet but Veron's angled, chipped ball has too much on it and Adler collects.
    • 48' Tame start to the second half.
    • 46' We're back underway in Germany and the hosts are right on the attack.
    • 45+2 And that's half time in Munich.
    • 45+1 Gonzalo Higuain latches onto a wonderful Di Maria through ball to nick the ball past an onrushing Adler and slot home just outside the box.
    • 45' Commentators' curse!!
    • 45' Following a brief leap in tempo the game limps toward half time punctuated by free-kicks.
    • 43' Klose goes down under the challenge of Walter Samuel in the box but Atkinson waves away the appeals.
    • 41' Di Maria's influence on the game continues to grow. He jinks forward before releasing Veron but the former Chelsea mans' attempted through ball is well read by Boateng.
    • 39' Germany break with Klose but the forward runs the ball out of play. Poor.
    • 38' First genuine piece of quality! Di Maria turns this way and that, leaving both centre-backs floundering before thundering an effort against the crossbar. Deserved a goal.
    • 37' But wait...
    • 36' This one has hit a bit of a brick wall!
    • 35' Another yellow for the visitors - Samuel this time. Some very cynical defending on display here.
    • 33' Considering the players on show tonight, this game has lacked any form of quality.
    • 31' The hosts waste the resulting free-kick.
    • 30' Only a yellow, when it really should have been red. And it would have been had it not been a friendly. Ozil does well to get to a Muller ball before the big centre back; beaten and knowing the winger had a clear run on goal, the Bayern Munich defender scythed down the forward.
    • 28' Demichelis is a lucky, lucky boy there.
    • 26' Germany retain the ball well in their hosts' half until Ballack is caught in possession. Argentina look to break with Messi but Schweinsteiger's cynical foul brings the break to a shuddering halt. Yellow card for the winger.
    • 24' Germany press their visitors all the way back to keeper Romero, whose aimless kick falls at the feet of a German midfield player. The hosts break but Podolski's cross is too close to the keeper.
    • 22' That was the first genuine clear cut chance. Lots of endeavour on show here but very little attacking output, as of yet.
    • 21' But the incumbent World Player of the Year fires the resulting free-kick straight at the wall. He then leathers the rebound...straight at the wall.
    • 20' Messi escapes from Ballack for the first time this evening and skips past a German lunge before being scythed down by Tasci. The maestro is over the free-kick...
    • 19' Argentina begin to settle as Veron's influence grows.
    • 18' Gutierrez switches wings but is well shackled by Boateng.
    • 17' Germany, roared on by a partisan home crowd, are in the ascendancy.
    • 15' Germany continue to press high up the field and the Argentineans struggle to cope under the pressure. Schweinsteiger swings over a corner but Veron heads clear.
    • 13' Di Maria bears down on Adler but the lino's flag puts an immediate end to Maradona's hopes of an opener. At the other end, Romero races off his line to sweep up a Schweinsteiger through ball. End to end stuff, here.
    • 11' Muller brigs down Di Maria and the South Americans again have a free-kick in a promising area. This time Ballack clears Messi's delivery.
    • 9' Adler does well to clear on the edge of the area with Veron lurking.
    • 8' The midfield area has been highly contested and very congested thus far.
    • 7' Lukas Podolski scythes down Gutierrez on the edge of the box and at an angle. Atkinson blows for a free-kick that Messi delivers but it is easily cleared by Mertesacker.
    • 5' Demichelis clears the danger for the visitors following some hesitant defending from Inter's Walter Samuel.
    • 3' A couple of robust challenges a piece thus far but very little else as these sides feel their way into this one.
    • 1' Martin Atkinson gets the match underway in Munich.
    • 19:45 Premier League foes Ballack and Mascherano contest the coin toss and the Germans - sporting a not so familiar black kit - elect to kick-off.
    • 19:42 A full to the brim Allianz-Arena is fit to burst as each national anthem is blared out over the tannoy and we're moments from kick-off.
    • 19:40 Both sides have put out near to full strength teams but a player to look out for is Thomas Muller of Bayern Munich who has been kicking up quite a stink in the Bundesliga this season.

Either coach will see tonight's match as a useful indicator to gauge their progress as they continue their build-up to South Africa.
