Juanfran is shown a straight red for a horror challenge in the final minutes of this game. That will probably mean that he's out for the rest of the season through suspension.

Valencia are now resorting to a long ball game, lumping it forward from the back. Atletico will be happy with that. That's the sore of play they can deal with.
87'
Now Simeone is conducting the Atletico supporters as they sing at the top of their voices in their corner of the Mestalla. This would be a huge result for Atletico. They only have two games after this.
85'
Atletico are enjoying a good spell of possession at the moment. Costa is looking to get on the end of everything, but the Valencia offside trap is working well so far. Can it hold out? And more importantly can they find a goal themselves?

Great save by Guaita! Costa is slotted through on goal, with the Spanish international attempting to round the Valencia keeper. But he does well to stay big and make the save from Costa.
83'
And Simeone is still going crazy on the touchline, with hand gestures and arm gestures and leg gestures. He's energetic, that's for sure.
82'
Turan has struggled to get involved in the game since coming on. He plays a pass through to Costa but the Brazilian-born striker has too much ground to make up and the chance is gone. Pass needed to be better.
Valencia CF Substitution
81'
Sosa lines up a shot from the edge of the box, but he gets a bit too excited and slashes the ball high and wide of the goal. Whoops!
80'
There's tension in the air here at the Mestalla. Atletico know how big this result could be for them in the grand scheme of the title race.
79'
Piatti has to stretch to collect a pass on the edge of the box, but under pressure from Miranda and Godin he gets a shot away on goal. However, it's a tame one and Courtois can collect with ease.
77'
Valencia are having a real go here. Atletico are starting to look a little concerned, as is Simeone on the sidelines. He hasn't sat down all game!
76'
Once again, sorry for delay in updates. Just the one chance of note to tell you, with Feghouli firing a shot over the bar. Besides the header from Jonas, it's probably the closest Valencia have come to a goal.

You get the feeling that Valencia are ramping up the pressure here. Atletico are sinking deeper and deeper, with Godin starting to look a little ragged. Can the home side take advantage of that?
Atlético de Madrid Substitution
64'
Good save! Jonas forces Courtois into an excellent save with a header at the back post. He just ghosted in there as the cross from the left wing came in.
63'
Valencia are still controlling much of the possession, with Atletico defending deep and hitting on the break. Unless Valencia score, I don't expect the balance of the game to change much from that.
62'
In much the same vein as Atletico's change, Valencia have given themselves added energy in the centre of the pitch with Feghouli coming on for Barragan, who had a relatively impressive game.
Valencia CF Substitution

Valencia sub: Antonio Barragan OFF, Sofiane Feghouli ON.

Villa receives a standing ovation from the home crowd as he is replaced by Turan. That change should give Atletico more of a presence in the centre of midfield.

Atletico Madrid sub: David Villa OFF, Arda Turan ON.

Apologies for the delay in getting updates to you. Suffering technical problems on our end, I'm afraid. You'll be pleased to know that you haven't missed much though. Valencia have had more of the ball as Atletico defend what they have.

Is there a better team to defend a 1-0 lead than Atletico Madrid? Well, I suppose there's a team in London that placed their claim for that title earlier today....

Valencia may have had plenty of the ball in the first half but it's Atletico who take a crucial lead into the break. Garcia showed his big game importance once again by finding the net just before half time.

Raul Garcia making a habit of scoring/producing his best in big games this season.

44'
That could turn out to be a hugely important goal for Atletico. This has been a difficult first half for Simeone's side, but it looks like they will go into the break with the lead.
43'

GOAL! Valencia 0 Atletico Madrid 1 (43 mins - Raul Garcia). Against the run of play Atletico take the lead, with Garcia beating the keeper to the ball to head Gabi's cross into the empty net.

Header - Bottom Right

41'
Filipe Luis, then Koke, play crosses into the Valencia boxbut the home side's defence deals with it well, with Mathieu clearing away from the danger. Costa and Villa have had little to feed on so far.
40'
With the first half coming to a close, Valencia are pressing the Atletico defence. On the balance of it they've probably been the better team, but for all their possession they have created very little.
39'
Jonas is presented with a half chance, but after taking the ball on the edge of the box Jonas angles his tame shot into the grateful arms of Courtois in the opposition goal.
38'
The referee's patience has snapped and he books Jonas for booting the ball away at an Atletico freekick. Expect more bookings before this game is out.

36'
Koke should have done much better with that chance. His footwork was all wrong. He was set wrong for the angle of the shot. It's why he ended up slamming the shot into the ground.
35'
Costa squares the ball back to Koke from the byline, robbing Mathieu of possession. But the midfielder loses his footing and slams his volley down into the turf. The effort ends up going over the bar.
34'
Atletico bring the big men up from the back, but they try some sort of training ground, short passing routine and Valencia come away with the ball. Simeone's side needs to make better use of their set pieces.
33'
The tempo of this game has dropped again, with Atletico taking their time on the ball whenever they win it back from the opposition. There's not been much adventure on show from either team.
31'
Diego Costa and Ricardo Costa clash, with the Valencia defender fouling the Atletico striker on the halfway line. Then the referee stands on Ricardo's toe, who makes the most of the contact. Must run in the surname.
30'
Simeone is on his touchline again. In fact does he ever leave his touchline?
29'
Koke plays a wonderfully wicked freekick into the box, but Juanfran is adjudged to have barged into a Valencia player and a freekick is awarded. Godin was also all over his marker from the set piece.
28'
A cross into the box drifts all the way out to Filipe on the left wing. However, Barragan does well to sprint across and make a last ditch block to deny the Brazilian left back.
27'
Koke is dropping deep in the centre to collect the ball from the defence. Gabi actually seems to be the one drifting out to the left today.
26'
The partnership between Villa and Costa is an interesting one. At times there appears to be no understanding between the two players, but when Atletico score it's invariably one of the two. It's like a partnership of individual interests.
25'
Both teams are competing wel but there's been a real lack of quality so far. Can Costa, Villa or Garcia up the standard?
23'
Barragan fouls Villa on the halfway line and tempers fray between the two teams just for a moment. Replays show that the Valencia player did indeed catch him quite hard on the shin.
22'
No real chances have been created, but that might be how Atletico like it. They can suffocate Valencia and hit them later in the contest. That's been their style all season long.
21'
Costa has been lively, as he always is, but hasn't seen much of the ball. Whenever he has received it, it's only been for a few fleeting moments. He hasn't had the chance to run at anyone yet.
20'
Simeone is waving and flapping his arms on the touchline, directing and instructing his team on the pitch. He's an intense man and that comes across in the players he puts on the pitch.
19'
Barragan lifts the ball over Juanfran at the byline but can't quite get it, as the ball drifts out for a goal kick. He's been impressive in the opening 20 minutes or so.
18'
Villa surges through the centre of midfield and looks for the run of Costa, who is breaking through the centre of the opposition defence, but the defender comes across and makes a crucial interception.
16'
Here's another foreboding statistic for you. Atletico haven't won in Valencia in their last 10 attempts. Having said that, this Atletico side are a different proposition this season. Can they break that run?
15'
Interesting shot by Parejo. From about 25 yards out he gets caught in two minds between pass and shot and ends up skewing the ball well wide of goal. He did neither!
14'
Valencia have wrestled back control of the ball and are knocking it about their defence, with Atletico sitting deep in their own half.
13'
Villa has scored just once in his last 10 games against Valencia. Of course, he spent a spell at the Mestalla and is a revered figure around these parts.
12'
Fantastic effort by Villa! He has his back to goal and swivels to get the shot away on goal. But his effort flashes just inches past the post. That would have been incredible. He knew exactly what he wanted to do.
11'

The visitors are enjoying a bit more of the ball now, making it stick in the centre of midfield. A pass goes over the top of the Valencia defence, with Costa looking to latch on to it, but Perreira steps up and the striker is offside.

Valencia/Atletico, always a good game. I know I keep banging on about it but feel if Atleti win this they win the league.

9'
Of course, anyone who watches Atletico regularly knows that this is how they like to play. They sit deep and soak up the pressure before breaking on the rapid counter attack. It's what they do well.
8'
Juanfran plays a long ball forward from the right back position, but Costa can't hold it up and Valencia come back again with the ball. As I say, they've started well.
7'
Barragan has started really well for Valencia. The fullbacks are playing their part for sure, surging down the wings to attack Atletico. The home side have been the better of the two teams so far.
6'
Valencia have started well and are passing the ball about well at the back. Atletico are packing their defence and will look to counter on the break.
5'
Tiago has come into the lineup, with Diego Ribas dropped by Simeone. He's one of the few changes that the Atletico manager has made for this game.
4'
Atletico have the Champions League semi-final second leg against Chelsea to think about, but unlike Chelsea they've named a full strength side, with both Villa and Costa starting.
3'
So as it stands Atletico are three points ahead of Real Madrid in the race for the Spanish league title. They can stretch that lead to six points today, with just two games left for Diego Simeone's side.
1'
We're under way at the Mestalla!
