    • 90' Full-time: Barcelona 5-0 Villarreal. They'll be no injury time, as Barcelona convincingly rout Villarreal to kick-off their La Liga title aspirations in the best possible fashion.
    • 88' Claudio Marchena is the latest Villarreal player to enter into the ref's book for handball.
    • 87' Valdes has had little to do, but he was called on then to parry a Camunas curling drive out on the left flank, away from goal. The Barca keeper keen to hold onto his clean sheet.
    • 85' David Villa gets to the byline but his cross is cut out for a corner. And, from that, Xavi overhits his delivery.
    • 84' To compound Villarreal's misery's Wakasao is booked for dissent.
    • 81' This time it's Thiago who can't quite connect with the volley after the ball had been played over the Spaniard midfielder's right shoulder.
    • 80' Another swift Bareclona move sees Villa released down the left flank. The striker cutting in on off the left flank and firing the ball just wide of Lopez's far post.
    • 77' Xavi whips a corner into the Villarreal box, but Jonathan's connecting header loops wide. It's just as well as Diego Lopez was flapping at thin air as the cross came in.
    • 75' It's now officially a rout as Messi plays the ball out wide to Thiago, before following his run into the box and clinically finishing off the return pass.
    • 74' GOAL! BARCELONA 5-0 VILLARREAL (Leo Messi)
    • 71' Rossi, who has had little support from his midfield tonight, manages to get a shot away for Villarreal but it's always travelling wide of Valdes' far post.
    • 70' Barcelona sub: Jonathan is on for Fabregas.
    • 69' Marcos Senna finds himself high up the field with the ball but fails to test Valdes. Instead, the ball gets swiftly sent up the other end, and Lopez is called into a save to deny Messi his second.
    • 66' Barcelona sub: Pedro (after being involved in some handbags with Zapata) comes off for David Villa
    • 64' Clever link-up play between Xavi, Messi and Fabregas, sees the ball find the latter but it is a surprisingly sloppy attempt at finding a teammate and it goes out for a Villarreal goal-kick.
    • 62' Pedro forces another corner out of Villarreal. The fact the Yellow Submarines have yet to register one, says all about how this match has developed.
    • 60' Pedro receives out on the left flank, but his angled drive at goal is comfortably gathered by Diego Lopez, with Messi having made a late run into the box.
    • 58' Final Villarreal sub: Wakaso comes on for Cani
    • 56' Attempting to stem the tide, Marcos Senna is coming on for Nilmar for Villarreal. And, for Barcelona, Xavi is coming on for Andres Iniesta... not a bad substitute to bring on it has to be said.
    • 55' Messi attempts to slot the ball through to Iniesta, but Lopez is alert to it and quickly runs out to gather.
    • 53' Villarreal are getting blown away by Barcelona's intricate, hot-knife-through-butter passing. This time it's Iniesta feeding Messi who rounds Lopez and finishes with aplomb. That is the Argentinean's 100th home goal for Barcelona.
    • 52' GOAL! BARCELONA 4-0 VILLARREAL (Leo Messi)
    • 51' So that's La Liga debut goals now for Barcelona's two main summer recruits of Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez.
    • 50' Villarreal sub: Camunas on for Borja Valero
    • 49' Moments after the goal, Messi finds Fabregas but the midfielder can't control his effort as it goes flying over the Villarreal bar.
    • 48' Thiago Alcantara clips a delightful through-ball into the path of Alexis Sanchez, who storms down the right and slots the ball calmly past Lopez to surely kill off the game at the start of this second-half. Sanchez is then booked for removing his shirt.
    • 47' GOAL! BARCELONA 3-0 VILLARREAL (Alexis Sanchez)
    • 46' Villarreal get us back underway as they bid to overturn that two-goal deficit.
    • 45' Half-time: Barcelona 2-0 Villarreal
    • 45' Right on the stroke of half-time Barcelona go two-up. Messi cleverly feeding the ball through to Fabregas, after the two had exchanged positions, and the Spaniard takes a touch around Diego Lopez before slotting into an empty net.
    • 45' GOAL! BARCELONA 2-0 VILLARREAL (Cesc Fabregas)
    • 44' Villarreal's Borja Valero is barged to the ground by Abidal, and he'll require treatment on the sidelines.
    • 43' Iniesta runs forward with the ball, and sidefoots it out to Alexis Sanchez on the right. However, the Chilean striker's attempt at deliverying it back to Iniesta, ghosting deep into the box, is snuffed out.
    • 42' Villarreal's Cani attempts a clipped ball down the left flank but it fails to find a target and goes out for a Barca throw-in.
    • 39' Villarreal are getting themselves more established in this match over the past few minutes. Although the referee's whistle had blown due to offside, Rossi forces a fine save from Valdes when put through one-on-one. The Spanish 'keeper then recovers brilliantly to scoop the ball away, after it came bouncing back off the crossbar on the Barca goalline.
    • 37' Alexis Sanchez darts down the Barca right-flank but his cutback fails to find a teammate and Villarreal can clear. The pace down both flanks is starting to hurt the Yellow Submarines.
    • 35' The free-kick is driven into the wall by Borja Valero but, preceding that, Fabregas is booked again for failing to step back 10 yards in a timely fashion.
    • 34' Mascherano is booked for hauling down Nilmar and it will be a free-kick to Villarreal. But the ref should have played on as Rossi would have been put through on goal. Blew his whistle too early there.
    • 33' Borja Valero attempts to feed Rossi, but the ball is cut out. However, Valero collects again and clips the ball into the path of Nilmar, but it is expertly headed clear by Thiago Alcantara.
    • 31' Zapata had been booked in the incident which resulted in Messi's curling free-kick in the 20th minute
    • 30' Villarreal's Bruno is currently off the pitch receiving treatment following a heavy challenge. He should be fine to continue though.
    • 29' Fabregas half-volleys a Messi corner towards goal but it gets a deflection on it's way over for another Barcelona corner... from which, Barca fail to capitalise.
    • 27' From the re-start, Guiseppe Rossi flashes a shot from 20 yards out into the side-netting of Valdes' goal.
    • 26' Barcelona break the deadlock and it's through their former 'B' player Thiago Alcantara, who runs with the ball right through the heart of the Villarreal midfield and slots the ball into the bottom corner with his left foot. No Villarreal player stepping up to close Alcantara down.
    • 25' GOAL! BARCELONA 1-0 VILLARREAL (Thiago Alcantara)
    • 24' Ooh, Messi threads the ball brilliantly through to Fabregas making an angled run into the Villarreal box, but Gonzalo just manages to stick out a leg on the stretch and clear behind to prevent what would have been a one-on-one opportunity for Cesc. From the corner, Abidal is unable to make proper connection with the ball.
    • 22' Cani goes in late on Messi and that draws plenty of boos from the Camp Nou faithful; no booking is shown by the ref though.
    • 21' Iniesta almost gathers a long-ball in his stride when darting dangerously forward into the Villarreal box, but the ball just runs away from him as he sticks a leg out.
    • 20' Barcelona win a free-kick 30 yards out in a central position, but Messi's whipped attempt is smothered comfortably by Diego Lopez
    • 18' Messi and Pedro link-up deep in Villarreal territory; with the return pass to Messi allowing the Argentiean magician to ghost in at a tight angle and force a fine stop from Diego Lopez. From the resulting corner, Sergio Busquets sends a looping header onto the top of the crossbar but the visitors hang on.
    • 16' Rossi is correctly flagged offside as the Italian attempts to gather a long-ball played out to the left flank.
    • 15' Villarreal enjoying a little bit more of the ball, but they have been unable to supply their frontline thus far. Nilmar and Rossi looking like they'll have to feed on scraps tonight.
    • 13' Diego Lopez just about gets to the ball ahead of Leo Messi in punching clear; the Argentinean having been played in courtesy of a subtle delivery from Thiago Alcantara.
    • 10' Fabregas gets in behind the Villarreal defence, but his cut-back is blocked for a corner. From that, the ball is played out to Mascherano and his clipped through-ball back into the box is over-hit and Villarreal can breathe again.
    • 8' Unconvincing goalkeeping from Diego Lopez as he flaps at a corner from the Barcelona left, but Eric Abidal is unable to convert. Instead, the ball gets played back out and, in the following delivery, Pedro heads over from a central position when unmarked. Early let off for Villarreal
    • 6' Barcelona break quickly after Villarreal get caught high up the field - Iniesta feeding Messi who flicks it to the right for Sanchez to attempt a shot at goal. But he snatches at it and it's an easy save for Diego Lopez
    • 4' Pedro attempts a low cross from the left flank for Barcelona, but Gonzalo is in the right position to clear comfortably.
    • 2' Barcelona have already engaged in some fluid interchanges of passes and positions. It could be a long night of chasing shadows for the visitors.
    • 1' And Barcelona get us underway...
    • 20:00 Injuries have forced the Catalan club to revert to a 3-4-3 formation, with only one recognised defender in Eric Abidal - with the additional defensive slots filled by midfielders Javier Mascherano and Sergio Busquets. Can Villarreal draw strength from that?

    • 19:55 Villarreal, meanwhile, will tackle the daunting trip to the Camp Nou without former star players Santi Cazorla and Joan Capdevila, who both left in the summer for pastures new. But the club can call on their dangerous attacking partnership ofv Guiseppe Rossi and Nilmar tonight.
