    • 90+4 That's it! A 1-1 draw is followed by hugs all round, Sunderland go above Newcastle and Norwich on to 38 points but with better goal difference. Stoke stay 11th, 41 points, all-but safe.
    • 90+3 SUNDERLAND SUB: Johnson is taken off for Bardsley.
    • 90+2 Johnson is struggling with a knock of some sort. Not what Sunderland want to see - he's played well today.
    • 90+1 STOKE SUB: Crouch comes off for ex-Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones.
    • 90' Four minutes added time being played.
    • 89' Rose is tripped by NZonzi but a good advantage from Mason as Rose finds Johnson, now Vaughan shoots but well wide.
    • 88' Johnson to take this free-kick from the left... Headed into the mixer by Cuellar but Begovic is a dominant force in his box and takes that without any trouble.
    • 87' A loose ball breaks to McClean, who spanks a low drive towards goal but blocked by Shawcross. But now Walters gives away a free-kick with a pull on Rose...
    • 86' SUNDERLAND SUB: Larsson hobbles off having picked up some cramp, Vaughan on in his place.
    • 85' The corner is swung in, bodies everywhere and it drops for NZONZI but he hooks the overhead kick over!
    • 84' Another corner to Stoke on the right as Rose challenges Etherington...
    • 83' Stoke have a corner on the right but Etherington's ball in is cleared.
    • 82' STOKE SUB: Etherington on for Adam.
    • 81' Johnson fouls Shotton after losing out to him on the Sunderland right.
    • 80' BIG MISS MCCLEAN! Johnson with a super run and cross, just misses Graham under pressure from Shawcross, and the ball bounces off McClean and into Begovic's arms!
    • 79' OFF THE POST FROM ROSE! It shaved the outside of the post, fantastic early shot from the full-back who cut on to his weaker right.
    • 78' Adam swings it in but Mignolet gets some hands on it and Johnson clears - but only as far as Adam, who shoots from range but sends it well wide.
    • 77' Stoke want a corner as a cross deflected behind by O'Shea. Given, Adam to take from the right...
    • 76' A break is almost on for Colback but he just lacks the pace to reach Johnson's sweeping crossfield pass.
    • 75' Adam tries to lob Mignolet from range but gets it all wrong.
    • 74' Long-range drive from Whitehead is seen late by Mignolet through a crowd of bodies but the Belgium keeper gets on to the rebound!
    • 73' Johnson and Larsson over this, which will be a cross... But a terrible ball by Johnson, out for a goal kick.
    • 72' Whitehead a touch late on Johnson, the home fans want a second yellow card but it wasn't worthy of that.
    • 71' Walters on the run, all bandaged up like Terry Butcher (minus the blood) but Jerome is caught offside.
    • 69' NZonzi is harshly penalised for a tug on McClean, who had his shirt in his hands too.
    • 68' Play restarts with Adam knocking it out for a Sunderland throw.
    • 67' Di Canio uses the injury to Walters as a time to speak to his players. Rose comes over to Walters to make sure he's okay, just a bit dazed after taking a shoulder to the head.
    • 66' Di Canio loses his rag and runs on to the pitch for half a second as Walters goes down and the ref stops play. Not a foul but Walters took a knock to the head.
    • 65' Huth keeps his cool to run it out under pressure from Huth.
    • 64' Game back on though. Sunderland have been much better this half. They have to keep their concentration though as Walters is set to volley but pushed by Larsson! No free-kick! That was a foul!
    • 63' GOAL SUNDERLAND! O'Shea with a close-range finish after Larsson's fantastic corner glanced off Whitehead's head into the Irishman's path. 1-1!
    • 63' Awkward clearance by Huth but it does the job and Sunderland have a throw on their left wing. Rose to take... Short to N'Diaye, Rose crosses, Cameron blocks and it's a corner.
    • 62' There was a chance for Graham to lay it off for N'Diaye but NZonzi nicked it away just in time.
    • 61' Jerome on the counter, he feeds NZonzi who unleashes a fine drive rising to the top left but well-held by Mignolet!
    • 60' Larsson swings it deep, Cuellar knocks it down and O'Shea pokes it on goal but off the line by Whitehead!
    • 59' Rose on a rampaging run down the left which earns Sunderland a corner. Larsson to take...
    • 57' Nice exchange between Shotton and Adam but Colback gets across to clear.
    • 56' Adam with a long crossfield pass aimed for Walters but just a bit too long. Throw to Sunderland.
    • 55' Johnson with a fantastic run inside from the right and a fierce left-foot shot but saved by Begovic, straight at him! Better.
    • 54' Johnson fails to take down a high ball on the right. Groans from the fans but it was too high for him.
    • 53' Larsson on the left but only Graham is in the box so he has to stand it up. Sunderland don't seem to realise that a lone striker needs midfield support.
    • 52' Walters with a good run, he seems to be fouled but play-on and a fine cut back should be put towards goal by Adam, but the Scot misses the ball!
    • 51' Di Canio is gesticulating in manic fashion as is his style. Not sure how that's going to help his 10 men.
    • 50' That bright start to Sunderland's half has lost a bit of fizz as Stoke get hold of the ball. Can see the visitors getting a second from a set piece - Sunderland all over the place in the first.
    • 48' Colback on the run down the right now but he fails to get the cross in.
    • 47' Colback with a cross, blocked into the path of LARSSON but blocked and behind for a corner! Much more like it.
    • 46' Lovely clipped cross by Johnson but it's just half a foot too high for Graham! Still Sunderland come forward...
    • 46' The second half is underway at Stadium of Light. Stoke leading 10-man Sunderland 1-0
    • 46' STOKE SUB: Geoff Cameron comes on for Marc Wilson, who had only just recovered from injury. Shotton switches to left-back.
    • 45+3 Half-time and Stoke lead 1-0, with Sunderland down to 10 men after Gardner's rush of blood. Not looking good for Di Canio's lads.
    • 45+2 Sunderland have a free-kick in the second of three minutes of injury time - and Johnson smacks a wicked low curler just past the far post with Begovic scrambling!
    • 45+1 Adam with a superb ball across for Jerome, who powers a header towards goal but it's a yard wide!
    • 45' Johnson almost sends Colback through but the youngster reacts a bit slowly to the nice angled pass and it rolls out for a goal kick.
    • 44' NZonzi booked for a rough challenge on N'Diaye. Sunderland on the move now as N'Diaye surges forward but Stoke clear the danger.
    • 43' Walters and Jerome on the run now, slipped back to Whitehead who shoots on goal but blocked! Nice sweeping move.
    • 43' Rose gets away with a naughty one on Jerome. Tasty now.
    • 42' Good run by Larsson down the left but Sunderland were outnumbered in the final third before Gardner was sent off - no chance this time.
    • 40' Long ball from Adam, but it's too high for Jerome and flies out for a goal kick.
    • 39' Good defending by Shotton and then Walters to bring it away on their right.
    • 38' Sunderland have had 52% of the possession - 48% is pretty good by Stoke's standards!
    • 37' Long ball aimed for Graham but put out to touch for a Sunderland throw. Very subdued now at the Stadium of Light.
    • 36' There's a fan on the pitch! Looks like a Sunderland fan angered at that red card. He walks off with help from the stewards.
    • 35' Larsson is booked for his antics after the initial challenge - Adam meanwhile is having treatment off the pitch but he looks shaken and bruised more than anything else, there was impact but no twist.
    • 34' RED CARD TO GARDNER! Sunderland a man and a goal down as Lee Mason reaches straight for the red card. It was a bad bad tackle, late and straight into the ankle.
    • 33' Good defending from Cuellar at the free-kick though as he calmly clears. Stoke could break here though as Adam is hacked down by Gardner, who will be booked. All kicks off though...
    • 32' Cuellar is booked for a block on Jerome off the ball.
    • 31' Rose goes down after a collision with Jerome, who raised a boot as the left-back thrashed the ball clear.
    • 29' ... Which slows down into a more conventional build-up until Gardner swings in a cross for Graham that Shawcross reaches first.
    • 28' NZonzi sends Walters away down the Stoke right but Rose gets back quickly, his challenge allowing Sunderland to counter attack...
    • 27' Shotton lumps the ball clear and it's all the way back with Mignolet.
    • 26' Terrible from McClean, who shoots about 10 yards wide when he had passing options.
    • 25' The ball is swung into the Sunderland box but Mignolet claims ahead of Crouch and Walters.
    • 24' McClean is harshly penalised for putting Adam to the floor and to be fair to the Scot he puts his arms up to the ref to signal it was a fair challenge. The free-kick is awarded anyway, Adam swinging it in, with Jerome turning nicely but Cuellar and Colback get it out for a throw.
    • 23' Good play by Johnson to skip in from the left but a rotten touch by McClean hands the ball straight back to Stoke via NZonzi. Sunderland have the ball back soon enough as the visitors just lump it to touch.
    • 22' Colback on the left for the hosts as a low-level roar rises from the stands - Johnson takes on Whitehead and fires a rising drive that rises well over.
    • 21' Whitehead swings the corner into the arms of Mignolet.
    • 20' The ball is spending a lot of time in the air. I know you don't need to be told that, but little else is happening of note. Little until Garnder hilariously falls over his own feet to concede a corner. Not ideal given who you're facing!
    • 19' Johnson to swing in left-footed... headed away by NZonzi and Shotton completes the clearance.
    • 18' Crunching challenge by Larsson on Adam. Fair though says the ref - Adam then fouls McClean and it's a Sunderland free-kick on the right wing.
    • 17' Collision between NZonzi and Johnson, Sunderland getting the free-kick.
    • 16' All very scrappy as you'd expect between these teams, who are not exactly purveyors of the fine art of passing.
    • 15' Bit of confusion at a Sunderland throw as it's lofted down the wing as Graham showed on the inside. Goal kick to Stoke.
    • 13' Gardner hits the free-kick on goal but it is several yards wide.
    • 12' Whitehead is booked for a cynical foul on Johnson who latched on to Rose's pass and got goal-side of the Stoke man.
    • 12' Johnson with an excellent delivery but Stoke are the biggest side in the business and it's cleared from O'Shea.
    • 11' McClean with a shot that is deflected off Walters to loop over for a Sunderland corner.
    • 10' Deary me the marking was soft at that corner, although to be fair Stoke's aerial dominance makes it hard to pick your man.
    • 9' GOAL STOKE!! The corner was superb from Adam, Walters with a fantastic header that is blocked on the line by Graham but Walters follows up to rifle it into the roof of the net! 1-0 Stoke!
    • 8' Shotton with a surging run down the right but Rose gets across to slide tackle to touch. Shotton will take the long throw that he won... Aimed for Huth but scrambled behind for a corner by N'Diaye...
    • 7' Huth with an interception in the left-back position as Johnson gave chase.
    • 6' Larsson blasts well over from the edge of the D after Stoke fail to clear their lines from that corner.
    • 5' Excellent run from Graham down the right but there's no-one in support for his cutback and a corner will suffice.
    • 4' A lofted ball from Adam almost causes the home defence problems but Cuellar gets it clear.
    • 3' Almost a fine ball from Johnson to Graham but Shawcross gets there first.
    • 2' Poor clearance from Begovic that flies for a throw in his own half. Sunderland have started well.
    • 1' The first half is underway!
    • 19:55 Stoke in their blue and red obviously on account of the near identical home strips. Pulis and Di Canio share a pre-match hug.
    • 19:50 You have to remember how close it is down there - Stoke are 11th but they are only three points ahead of Sunderland in 17th. Premier League - Standings
    • 19:45 Paulo Di Canio just before kick-off: "Obviously a win would be vital, but we all knew the fight for survival would go to the last game. We are here to fight."

    • 19:35 MATCH ODDS: Sunderland 23/20, Stoke City 13/5, Draw 21/10
    • 19:30 Tony Pulis: “I think [Asmir Begovic] has been consistently the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season. He’s been different class for us. The experience from playing games regularly has been the biggest factor. Asmir has had a full run at the team and grown in stature because of it.”
    • 19:25 Paolo Di Canio: "After [the derby win against] Newcastle, it was a three-day party for the fans, the players became heroes. I couldn't go 400 yards for a haircut. In Sunderland, there is a passion like Naples. You can't go out because a butcher comes out with meat saying, 'It's for you, for your family'. Many girls came and hugged me and I was wondering what was going on. But we have to make sure for the future that there can't be too much positive poison because otherwise we are going to lose."
    • 19:20 Stoke defender Marc Wilson has recovered from a hamstring injury to start, replacing Geoff Cameron in the XI, but midfielder Glenn Whelan and defender Andy Wilkinson miss out with groin and back problems respectively. Matthew Etherington is only on the bench though, having recovered from a back injury last week. Triple-pronged attack of Crouch, Jerome and Walters.
    • 19:15 Sunderland are without top scorers Steven Fletcher and Stephane Sessegnon for the remainder of the season, while fellow forward Connor Wickham is out with a calf problem and skipper Lee Cattermole also out for the run-in with a knee injury. As a result Danny Graham starts up front, while midfielder David Vaughan is only on the bench.
    • 19:10 TEAMS - Sunderland: Mignolet, Colback, Rose, Cuellar, O'Shea, N'Diaye, Larsson, Gardner, Johnson, McClean, Graham; Subs: Westwood, Bardsley, Kilgallon, Vaughan, Mangane, Marrs, Mandron /// Stoke: Begovic, Shotton, Wilson, Huth, Shawcross, Whitehead, Adam, N'Zonzi, Walters, Crouch, Jerome; Subs: Sorensen, Jones, Owen, Cameron, Kightly, Etherington, Palacios
    • 19:05 FACT: Sunderland have won three and lost none of their four previous Premier League home meetings with Stoke, keeping four clean sheets in the process.

  3. Stoke were terrible. Their goal apart, they were slow in everything. They looked disinterested in this match, it was hard to see which team was down to 10 men. Give SAFC credit they wanted it more, and took the game by the scruff of the neck and piled the pressure on a very poor looking Stoke.

  7. Spineless performance by Stoke in the second half. Pulis should fine the entire team for that gutless performance against 10 men. At least we know that you will be in the bottom 3 this time next season if you consider your performance adequate.
