With the win, the Rossoneri restore their five-point lead at the top of Serie A after Inter had reduced the gap to two points with their victory over Bologna yesterday. For Sampdoria, they remain 12th and are now without a win in five. They take on Napoli next while Milan return to Europa League action with an away tie against Sparta Prague.

Milan hold on to win 2-1 and stretch their run of away victories in Serie A to seven games. The game looked comfortable when Castillejo made it 2-0 in the 77th minute moments after coming on, but Ekdal's brilliant header five minute later gave the home side hope of salvaging a draw in the closing stages. However, it was not to be and Milan hung on for what was a deserved victory on the balance of play.

The league leaders had been the better side for the majority and were inches from opening the scoring moments before when Rubic's effort was cleared off the line. They would eventually get their reward when Jankto was penalised for an accidental handball from a Hernandez header. It seemed harsh, but Kessie made it count, finishing with composure to give the Rossoneri the advantage.
