    • 90' We'll have two minutes of added time at the end of this match. The England bench are congratulating each other.
    • 89' Great determination shown from Gerrard there and you could really see what it meant to the Liverpool man to secure England's passage through to the World Cup finals.
    • 88' GOOOOOOOOOOOAL!!!! England are going through to the World Cup finals!!!! Gerrard puts England through. Milner finds the Liverpool man with a clever lobbed through ball as gerrard bears down on goal. The England captain shows great determination to muscle his way past Glik and lift the ball over the onrushing Szczesny.
    • 86' The home fans can barely watch. Many of them with their head in their hands. A chorus of “God save the Queen” rings around Wembley.
    • 85' Townsend is replaced by the ever-reliable Milner. A smart substitution. One that needed to be made with the hosts under pressure.
    • 84' Hart is wasting as much time as possible. Every time he receives the ball, he's making sure that the Polish strikers close him down before distributing.
    • 83' Nervy times for England here. They will need to dig really deep to keep their opponents out. If Poland score then England must face a play-off in November.
    • 82' Wilshere does come on as Sturridge makes way.
    • 80' The visitors look to attack after Rooney surrenders possession once more. The striker chases Peszko back into his own half and makes an honest attempt at winning the ball, but concedes the free kick and is booked.
    • 79' Jack Wilshere is about to come on. Could he replace Sturridge and give England the chance to go with a central-midfield three?
    • 78' GREAT SAVE!! Sturridge chases a loose ball on the left and keeps it in play. He goes head-to-head with Celeban, showing the defender one way before cutting inside to shoot at goal. It’s hit with real venom but Szczesny palms it over for a corner.
    • 77' Rooney gives the ball away on the half-way line and Poland look to counter. lampard comes across and cynically fouls Peszko. He's booked.
    • 76' Poland make their third and final change. The dangerous Mierzejewski is the man to come on. ZieliƄski is replaced.
    • 75' Gerrard’s corner from the right is hit with too much pace. Sturridge goes down in the box but the referee is not interested.
    • 74' Townsend is sent down the right by Smalling. There are plenty of bodies in the penalty area but the Tottenham man takes too long to get his cross in, allowing for Poland to get their shape and clear the danger.
    • 73' The fierce intensity to this game looks to have taken it out of a few of the England players. The tempo seems to be lacking at present.
    • 72' England regain possession and pass it amongst themselves, looking to find a gap in the Polish defence. It doesn’t seem to be coming, but the home fans seem less nervous when the ball is in their possession.
    • 70' Lampard does indeed make his way on to the pitch. Carrick is the man to go off. Hopefully Lampard will be able to give the hosts a bit more stability at the back and an extra dimension in the hunt for the second goal.
    • 69' Frank Lampard appears to be warming up on the touchline. He could replace Carrick, who was given the nod tonight.
    • 68' Peszko gets his first taste of the action, skipping past Smalling to drill a ball into the penalty area. Hart commands his box once again, racing off his line to claim the low cross.
    • 67' GREAT EFFORT FROM ROONEY!! The striker drops deep and cuts in from the left, beating Jędrzejczyk with a smart bit of skill before attempting to find the far corner with a wicked curling effort. Szczesny is equal to it and beats it away.
    • 65' Wojtkowiak gets in-behind Smalling - not for the first time - and looks to cross. The flag is up, though.
    • 64' Poland make a like-for-like change. Peszko comes on and replaces Sobota.
    • 63' Sobota bursts down the left and, with very little else on, looks to play an eye of a needle pass into the path of Lewandowski. Jagielka clears.
    • 62' England look a little shaky and a little nervous. They’re dropping ever-deeper. Townsend has the chance to give England a little respite but the winger cuts inside and shoots from distance. Not quite what the hosts needed there.
    • 61' There's a slight break in play as we have a fan that has broke the security barrier to make his way on to the pitch. Probably something England quite needed...
    • 60' CHANCE FOR POLAND!! Lewandowski is put through on goal and only has Hart to beat. The Man City stopper is at his very best, though, commanding his box and repelling the Dortmund man. Great stop with his right hand.
    • 59' The majority crowd hold their breath as Gerrard picks the ball up 30 yards from goal and beats his man. Everyone knows what’s coming, but Gerrard’s effort is dragged wide.
    • 58' Townsend breaks out of his own half and sends Rooney through towards the Poland goal. The striker can’t quite get the ball out of his feet and is dispossessed.
    • 57' A chorus of whistles and jeers continue to greet every successful England pass. The Polish fans have really been excellent tonight.
    • 56' As good as England have been, a 1-0 lead won’t fill them with too much confidence. They’ll really want that second goal…
    • 55' SO CLOSE!! Almost an own goal. Rooney bursts down the right and crosses for Sturridge. Szczesny comes for it but Krychowiak attempts a sliding block and almost turns the ball home.
    • 54' Wojtkowiak overlaps down the left and isn’t picked up by Smalling. Fortunately for the full-back, Krychowiak’s ball is overhit.
    • 53' Townsend gets away down the right and then cuts inside, attempting to go past Wojtkowiak but his first touch lets him down and, although he goes down, noting is given.
    • 52' GREAT SAVE! Gerrard’s corner is sent to the back post. Cahill rises highest to head on goal. Szczesny sees it early and is able to get a firm hand to it, palming the ball around the post.
    • 51' England attack once again – Rooney the architect. The forward drops out right and sends in a looping cross that is met by Sturridge who turns it goalwards, though it’s cleared by Glik.
    • 50' Gerrard’s corner from the left is met by the backpedalling Welbeck, who heads wide from 10 yards.
    • 49' Poland’s corner is cleared at the near post and Rooney looks to lead an attack. He exchanges a lovely one-two with Townsend to play in Sturridge. The Liverpool man attempts a number of step-overs on the left and is dispossessed.
    • 48' It’s been a very bright start from the visitors. They’ve seen all of the ball in these opening minutes and have England penned in.
    • 47' The visitors made a substitution at half-time. Klich replaced M. Lewandowski.
    • 46' The second half is under way. Poland kick off.
    • 45' England play the ball around amongst themselves in their own half, waiting for the half-time whistle to sound of which it does. England take a deserved 1-0 lead into the break.
    • 44' Poland have the ball in the back of the net but Sobota is a yard or two offside. It takes a while for the visiting support to realise the flag had been raised, but the players know immediately.
    • 42' The home crowd are in full voice now. That has certainly given them a lift.
    • 41' GOAL!!!! ROONEY SCORES!! Baines finds some space down the left and isn’t challenged by Błaszczykowski. The full-back sends a devilish ball into the penalty area which is met by Rooney who glances the ball past Szczesny with a superb header.
    • 39' A large section of the crowd (guess which one) jeer and whistle every England touch. Wembley has never been this vocal. I’m sure the England players can hear it all and they won’t be too keen on it but it is making for a great atmosphere.
    • 38' The visitors regain possession and are looking to slow down the tempo. It’s been a hectic ten minutes or so for their backline and they’ll be glad of the break.
    • 37' Poland, in typical fashion, look to attack from another failed England corner. Lewandowski leads the line but is on a different wavelength to Mierzejewski and the move breaks down.
    • 36' A sustained period of pressure has Poland pegged back, defending deep. Gerrard is the first to have shot blocked from 20 yards before Rooney’s drive is beaten away by Szczesny. Poland are holding firm but England are looking threatening.
    • 34' A brilliant passing move sees Rooney and Gerrard link well, freeing Welbeck into the penalty area. Szczesny is off his line in a flash to smother the ball at the feet of the striker.
    • 33' Townsend is enjoying real success down the right at the minute. He cuts inside again and finds Sturridge with a clever ball that cuts out a number of defenders. Sturridge looks to shoot but drags his effort wide.
    • 32' Gerrard’s set-piece from the right is so poor and is cleared by the first defender. It was such a great position for England, too…
    • 31' Unbelievable miss! Baines' corner isn't dealt with and falls to Welbeck SIX yards from goal. Somehow the Man United forward drags a left-footed shot wide of the goal. It was harder to miss that.
    • 30' Gerrard and Sturridge exchange a number of short, sharp passes on the edge of the box before the former finds the overlapping Baines. The defender's cross is sent out for a corner.
    • 29' This game certainly is tense but it is so exciting. England have had the better of the chances so far but with Lewandowski down the other end of the field, either side could open the scoring here.
    • 27' CROSSBAR!! Wonderful, wonderful effort from Townsend. The Spurs man rolls his defender on the right of the Poland box to send a dipping, curling effort past Szczesny and onto the crossbar. So close.
    • 26' Gerrard's corner is met by the head of Jagielka who heads wide from six yards.
    • 25' Great play from Townsend down the right presents Sturridge with an opportunity just inside the Poland box. The Liverpool striker dwells on the ball and is dispossessed but is given another half-chance as Poland fail to clear their lines. Glik finally sends the ball out for a corner.
    • 24' Ukraine are now 3-0 up in their match with San Marino. The hosts aren't known for their comebacks so it looks like England will need the three points. But we already knew that...
    • 23' Lewandowski should score. Poland attack in numbers yet again, and do so very swiftly. Blaszczkowski flies down the right and rolls the ball inside where Mierzejewski allows it to roll through his legs into the path of Lewandowski. The Dortmund man takes one touch to set himself inside the England box but drags his shot wide of the mark.
    • 22' CHANCE! Gerrard whips in a delightful ball from the left that is too hot for Szczesny to handle. The keeper stays put as the ball flies across his six-yard box. Smalling gets in front of his man but can’t make contact and the ball flies narrowly wide of the goal.
    • 21' Welbeck and Sturridge swap flanks which allows for the Man United man to attack Celeban. It pays dividends immediately as the Pole concedes a free-kick.
    • 20' Nothing comes of the free-kick as Sturridge heads away at his near post. 20 minutes gone and the closest either side have come is that 20-yeard drive from Townsend. Tense.
    • 19' Wojtkowiak is wary of an impending Smalling challenge and prematurely hits the floor. The free-kick is given, though, much to Smalling’s annoyance. Dangerous position.
    • 18' Ukraine are already 2-0 up against San Marino. As it stands, England will be going into the play-offs. Long way to go, though…
    • 17' Baines pulls the ball back towards the edge of the area in what looks like one from the training ground. It’s poorly hit and Poland clear their lines.
    • 16' Superb play from Baines. The defender overlaps down the left and gets the better of his man. There’s a lack of bodies in the box so the defender hold the ball up before drawing the foul.
    • 15' CLOSE. Błaszczykowski cuts in from the left and feeds the ball to Sobota on the left who turns Smalling inside-out in his own penalty area. The Poland winger drills a shot towards goal that looks to have beaten Hart but crashes into the side netting.
    • 13' It’s been a very entertaining end-to-end start to this game. Both sides look dangerous when attacking and are doing so in numbers.
    • 12' Lewandowski is causing the England defenders all sorts of trouble whenever he picks up the ball. This time he dances through three England men to shoot from 15 yards. Fortunately for the hosts Cahill is able to make the block.
    • 11' FIRST CHANCE OF THE GAME!! Townsend picks up the ball 25 yards from goal and wriggles away from a number of challenges on the edge of the Poland penalty area before sending a rasping effort towards Szczesny’s goal. The shot is his with venom but it’s too close to the Arsenal stopper who is able to beat it away.
    • 10' England lose possession from the corner and Poland attack in numbers. It opens up in front of the striker who opts to shoot from distance. Hart is equal to it and makes the save.
    • 9' Some clever play from Rooney deep inside the Poland half frees Baines down the line. The Everton man sends a devilish ball into the penalty area but Jędrzejczyk is able to turn it away for a corner.
    • 8' Smart play from Lewandowski to emerge from his own half, skip past the challenge of Gerrard and Townsend and break towards the England penalty area. The striker attempts to find Błaszczykowski but the pass is hit with too much pace.
    • 7' Mierzejewski is given the ball after an England attack breaks down. The midfielder looks to break into the England half but hits the deck following Gerrard’s strong shoulder challenge. The Pole is claiming a free kick but the referee is not interested and play is waved on.
    • 6' Rooney gathers the ball with his back to goal on the edge of the penalty and, after brushing off the challenge from Glik, looks to find Sturridge with a clever reverse ball. Wojtkowiak reads the danger and is able to make an interception in his own box.
    • 5' It’s been a very high-tempo start from both sides, amid an electric atmosphere inside Wembley. There are flares in the background. It looks like a totally different stadium.
    • 4' Welbeck finds some space behind Wojtkowiak and looks to get to the byline to cross. The Man United man’s touch is a poor one, though, which allows for the defender to recover and make the tackle.
    • 3' Błaszczykowski and Lewandowski look to link down the right but Jagielka gets his body in between the much-coveted Dortmund forward and ushers the ball out for a goal kick.
    • 2' The hosts lose possession immediately. Townsend’s attempted ball down the line to Welbeck is overhit and the ball runs out for a throw-in. Gerrard tracks down Sobota from the restart and is able to win back the ball.
    • 1' The match is under way. England kick off at Wembley.
    • 19:55 The two teams emerge from the tunnel to huge roars from their respective fans. Just the usual pre-match formalitites to get through and then we'll be under way. Nervous? Excited? Both?
    • 19:52
    • 19:50 With 10 minutes to go until kick-off, how do you see this game going? England must match Ukraine's result in San Marino to secure a place in next year's World Cup, but with that match seemingly only ending in a Ukraine win, England will need to take all three points here. Can they do it? Let me know at the comments section at the bottom of the page or on Twitter @JoshuaHayward99.
    • 19:45 The 18,000-strong Poland crowd will be paying tribute to Battle of Britain pilots by holding up a large banners inside the stdaium this evening. Two Polish fighter pilot units – squadrons 302 and 303 – flew alongside the British during the 1940 Battle of Britain, shooting down a total of 203 enemy aircraft between them. A total of 29 from 145 Polish fighter pilots died in the battle. Read about it here. (Web only)

    • 19:40 The teams are being read out inside Wembley as I write. The Poland fans are certainly making themselves heard. An almighty roar erupts when Robert Lewandowski's name is read out. The home fans then start chanting the names of their respective players, in a response to the raucous noise of the opposition.

    • 19:15 Notable team news for Poland is that Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny starts in front of in-form Southampton stopper Artur Boruc. What are your thoughts, people? Are you happy with Hodgson's team or do you think they'll struggle against the dangerous Poles? Let me know on Twitter @JoshuaHayward99

    • 18:45 However, with the Poles arriving at Wembley with a goalkeeper described by Brian Clough as “a circus clown in gloves”, few expected anything other than a convincing England victory. The unorthodox Jan Tomaszewski repelled England throughout the 90 minutes as the game finished in a disappointing 1-1 draw, meaning that England failed to reach the World Cup finals.
    • 18:40 The Three Lions’ record over Poland during the recent years does make for good reading, but the painful memories of one of England’s darkest days will bring tonight’s clash into perspective. The first competitive meeting between the countries in Chorzow in June 1973 ended 2-0 to the hosts - England’s only defeat to Poland - which ultimately left Alf Ramsey’s struggling side needing to win the return fixture in October to reach the World Cup finals in Germany.
    • 18:35 Feel free to get in contact with me tonight. I'll post as many comments as I possibly can. What are your thoughts on Hodgson's team selection, should the rumours be correct? How do you see the game going? Will England cruise to victory and secure their place in Brazil or can Poland cause a real upset? Let me know on the comments section at the bottom of the page or on Twitter @JoshuaHayward99.

    • 18:25 We haven't received full confirmation as of yet but it is believed that Michael Carrick will replace Frank Lampard in the heart of the England midfield, while Chris Smalling looks set to replace the suspended Kyle Walker at right full-back.
    • 18:20 Poland’s defeat to Ukraine last week means that they can no longer qualify for the World Cup, but tonight’s visitors will be playing for pride and will want to cause a huge upset. With a huge crowd behind them, after the FA allowed Poland an extra 10,000 tickets, England’s opponents will certainly be up for the tie.
    • 18:15 England will go into this evening’s match high on confidence following their 4-1 victory over Montenegro on Friday. Hodgson was bold in his team selection, opting to give Andros Townsend his full debut – a tactic that paid off with the Spurs winger playing a part in the opening goal as well as getting on the score sheet himself.
