    • 74' Ireland have had two shots on goal in 74 minutes.

    • 63' Westwood comes for a long free-kick into the box and easily claims.
    • 62' Still very poor form Ireland, with only McGeady looking a threat down the left.
    • 60' Konysbayev goes down and the physio is on. Expect a lot of this in the final half-hour.
    • 59' McGeady puts in a lovely cross towards Keane, but the Ireland captain fails to get to the ball.
    • 58' Shmidtgal's free-kick is cleared and Ireland break, but McGeady's cross is cleared by Nurdauletov.

    • 52' Another, misplaced, long ball by St Ledger to Walters runs out of play.

    • 50' Keane tries to put in Walters on the byline, but the balls rolls away for a goal-kick.
    • 49' The ball bounces up invitingly for Konysbayev 25 yards from goal, but his shot is way over the bar.
    • 48' McCarthy is not being given a chance to get on the ball. Everything is being pinged long. When he does get in the box down the right channel, he falls over his feet when well placed.
    • 47' Walters fouls Rozhkov, so the Ireland gameplan is as it was!
    • 46' Second half kicks off, with Kazakhstan taking the tip-off. No changes from either side.
    • 45+1' Half-time, and Kazakhstan lead Republic of Ireland 1-0. They fully deserve to be ahead from captain Kairat Nurdauletov's 37th minute header. Ireland have been one-dimensional and frankly awful.
    • 45' One minute of added time, and O'Shea fouls Shmidtgal on the halfway line.
    • 45' O'Dea sticks his leg into the goalkeeper's knee, and deservedly gets a yellow card.
    • 44' McGeady's corner comes out to Whelan, but Shmidtgal charges the ball down.
    • 44' Kazakhstan are just putting the men behind the ball, and Ireland are so one-dimensional with their long ball. But Keane wins a corner.
    • 43' Kirov heads away a McGeady cross from the left meant for Walters.
    • 41' Konysbayev forces a low save from Westwood, then Nuserbayev hits the follow-up onto the post. He was offside playing the second ball, though.
    • 40' O'Dea concedes another foul, this time near the centre circle. Shmidtgal's free-kick is cleared by Walters.
    • 38' No complaints about that. Kazakhstan have been on top for the last 20 minutes. Richard Dunne was missed in the centre of defence with that free-kick. You'd imagine the Honey Monster would have dealt with that cross.
    • 37' GOAL: KAZAKHSTAN 1-0 REPUBLIC OF IRELAND. A beautiful delivery from Shmidtgal and the captain Kairat Nurdauletov flicks the ball over Westwood and into the corner of the goal.
    • 36' Konysbayev is tripped by Ward on the right.
    • 35' Anatoli Bogdanov clears an O'Shea cross. Not a great delivery, but good to see O'Shea trying to get into the game on the attacking front.
    • 34' St Ledger makes room to get on the end of McGeady's floated corner, but is unable to get any power on the header.
    • 33' Ward's cross gets a deflection and it is Ireland's fifth corner.

    • 31' Kirov is able to head away McGeady's free-kick at the back post, under pressure from O'Dea.
    • 30' Ulan Konysbayev trips McGeady on the left wing, and another chance for Ireland from a set-piece.
    • 29' Nuserbayev leaves a boot in on O'Shea, and gets a yellow card.
    • 28' McGeady does brilliantly to get in a cross from the left, which Keane heads wide after an unseen shove from Rozhkov.
    • 27' Interestingly, neither St Ledger nor O'Dea went up for that free-kick.
    • 26' Whelan sends it to Cox, who puts the ball in towards O'Shea at the far post but it is cleared.
    • 25' Walters win a free-kick on the left, 35 yards out on the left.
    • 24' Ward steers a header back to Westwood, but there is little doubt that Kazakhstan are playing the better football now after a nervy start.
    • 23' Free-kick to Kazakhstan, after a foul by Whelan on the last defender.
    • 22' Sean St Ledger climbs all over Ostapenko 40 yards out. Ostapenko's header from Shmidtgal's free-kick loops up and is caught by Westwood.
    • 21' Quick passing between Cox and Walters down the left channel, but the Nottingham Forest player can only shoot into the side netting.
    • 20' Shmidtgal puts in a ball from a free-kick that O'Shea clears with a firm header.
    • 19' Clever touch from Keane to flick the ball up and past Nurdauletov, but the evntual shot is awful.
    • 18' Ward then floats up a long cross from the left towards Walters, which is easily caught by Kazakhstan goalkeeper Sidelnikov.
    • 17' More long ball stuff to Walters, and the ball drops for McGeady to try two efforts which both hit a Kazakhstan player.
    • 16' Nuserbayev tries a reverse pass to Ostapenko which is just cleared by an Ireland boot.
    • 15' Shmidtgal gets the ball down the left and arrows in a lovely ball that is crying out for a header but no Kazakhstan attacker is there in the box.
    • 13' Rozhkov tries a long ball but Darren O'Dea is able to head back to Kieren Westwood.
    • 12' Free-kick to Ireland that is wasted by McGeady and Glenn Whelan, who dinks the ball up far to close to Sidelnikov.
    • 11' Tanat Nusrbayev drives through the centre but his ball into he right channel just evades left-back Aleksandr Kirov.
    • 9' Some nice pressure from Kazakhstan here.
    • 7' McGeady finds space down the left and crosses, but Rozhkov heads away under pressure from Walters.
    • 6' Good link up play between Nuserbayev and Konysbayev on the right, but the eventual shot is way over the Ireland crossbar.
    • 5' Another long ball held up by Walters, and Aiden McGeady is able to cut inside and try a shot that goes just wide.
    • 4' Both John O'Shea and then Jon Walters almost get on the end of corners, only for a Kazakhstan head each time to deflect away. Ireland are definitely dominant in the air, so expect plenty of long ball stuff.
    • 3' McCarthy tries to place a low left-footed shot into the bottom corner, but Kazakhstan goalkeeper Sidelinkov saves well low to his right.
    • 2' Ireland misplace a pass from 25 yards, as McCarthy is unable to find McGeady. The ptch could be an issue.
    • 2' Ireland start with a long ball from Stephen Ward to Jon Walters and the move breaks down. The Trap philosophy has not got any more subtle since the Euros.
    • 1' Kazakhstan play in blue, Ireland kick off in their change strip of white shirts and green shorts. It is 10pm in Astana, and the roof is open.
    • 17:01 Oh god, how naff. Both captains make a fair play statement through the PA. "I promise not to beat the bejaysus out of you," is the gist of it.
    • 17:00 Heinrich Schmidtgal is the only Kazakhstan player that plays outside of his home country. He currently plays for SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the Bundesliga.
    • 16:59 Given the summer of Irish sporting support, it is quite strange not to hear Amhrán na bhFiann being belted out by thousands.
    • 16:58 The Kazakh anthem sounds very Cold War-ish, like the background music to a film adaptation of a Len Deighton novel.
    • 16:57 KAZAKHSTAN: Sidelnikov, Kirov, Kislitsyn, Mukhtarov, Nurdauletov (c), Konysbaev, Bogdanov, Ostapenko, Schmidtgal, Nusserbayev, Roshkov...Subs: To follow. ///REPUBLIC OF IRELAND: Westwood, O’Shea, St Ledger, O’Dea, Ward, Whelan, McCarthy, McGeady, Cox, Walters, Keane...Subs: To follow.
    • The pitch for the Group 3 qualifier at the Ortalyk Tsentralnyi Stadium is a plastic one, but it is worth remembering that League of Ireland side St Patrick's Athletic beat the Kazakh side Shakhter Karagandy in the Europa League last year.
    • 16:51 200 Ireland fans have made the 3,000 mile trek to Astana, with some of them having left on Sunday!
    • 16:50 James McCarthy makes his first competitive start for the Republic of Ireland.
    • 16:47 Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni named Simon Cox in the starting eleven, ahead of James McClean. Cox will play on the right wing rather than his usual centre-forward position.
    • 16:44 Hello and welcome to tonight's coverage of the World Cup qualifier between Kazakhstan and the Republic of Ireland.
