Manchester City vs Chelsea LIVE!

Manchester City negotiated a heavyweight Carabao Cup tie with Chelsea as second-half goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez secured a 2-0 home win on Wednesday to send them into the fourth round.

City manager Pep Guardiola made seven changes to the line-up that scraped a 2-1 win over Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday but still named a team brimming with talent costing the champions more than £300million. Chelsea, last season’s beaten finalists, also fielded a strong side including 18-year-old Lewis Hall but City dominated the game and were worthy winners.

Jack Grealish, the Premier League’s most expensive signing, was City’s standout player and created a number of chances but it was Mahrez who broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute from a free kick.

Alvarez doubled City’s lead five minutes later, sending a spectacular crossfield ball towards Mahrez and knocking the loose ball in from close range after Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy had parried the Algerian’s low strike.

When is the draw?

22:04 , Marc Mayo

The draw for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup will take place on Thursday, November 10, 2022.

It will be held after the conclusion of Manchester United vs Aston Villa at Old Trafford, the final third-round match. Assuming that match does not go to penalties, the draw should begin at about after 10pm GMT.

City march on!

21:57 , Marc Mayo

Full time!

21:52 , Marc Mayo

Man City are into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup!

A third defeat in a row for Chelsea...

21:49 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: City escape a goalmouth scramble!

Ortega flaps at Havertz’s cross, Gomez heads onto his own post and Havertz pops up from an offside position to score... and the flag goes up.

Four minutes added on.

21:48 , Marc Mayo

89 mins: Some terse words between Grealish and Azpilicueta leads to a booking for both.

A late challenge from the Chelsea man clipped the heels of Grealish, who reacted with a shove.

21:46 , Marc Mayo

86 mins: Close! Mount spins after a corner is only half cleared, and his effort whips across the face of goal - and wide.

Elsewhere, just the four games have gone to penalties with Liverpool vs Derby set to join them.

21:42 , Marc Mayo

83 mins: Havertz finds space down the left and puts in a nice cross for Sterling, who gets bumped off by Ake before the ball comes in as City sail through another Chelsea push.

21:39 , Marc Mayo

80 mins: Guardiola looks to calm things down as Ake comes on for Laporte, against his old club and the team that tried to sign him in the summer.

21:38 , Marc Mayo

79 mins: Plenty of space for Chelsea’s fresh legs to attack into yet no real precision to their attacks.

A goal would make the final ten minutes very interesting...

21:35 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: On comes Havertz to replace Hall, the 18-year-old coming close to a brace tonight. He can take heart from this outing.

That is Chelsea’s final substitution, so no debut for Hutchinson in this one - or the Carabao Cup at all this year, it looks like.

21:32 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: The flag is up to chalk off another cracking stop by Ortega, this time to turn Pulisic’s close-range effort wide.

The City reserve goalkeeper has been superb all evening.

21:30 , Marc Mayo

71 mins: A real fluff from Mount as he attempts to carry the ball out of his half. Into touch the ball goes with a heap of ironic cheers from the home fans.

They’re sitting pretty now, the Etihad quietly watching another winning display from its team.

21:27 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Ziyech, whose played rather well, comes off for Sterling. A fine reception from the City fans.

Chalobah, Broja and Zakaria also come off for Azpilicueta, Mount and Gallagher.

21:26 , Marc Mayo

67 mins: Grealish goes on a trademark mazey run before driving a shot into a flying Chelsea block.

Potter is turning to his bench...

21:23 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: Ziyech produces a simply delightful piece of skill to beat Gomez and finds Hall in the box.

The teenager’s shot is well hit and towards the corner... only for Ortega to protect his clean sheet with a marvellous save!

21:21 , Marc Mayo

61 mins: There is a sense that City will go for the jugular here.

Palmer arrives in the box to test Mendy again and the hosts’ high press is still in full flow. They’ve never been a team to pass up a big scoreline.

Chelsea hadn’t done a lot wrong until the wall failed to jump for Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick goal.

Now they are 2-0 down after lazy defending to not get back in after a very simple Manchester City goal which was turned in by Julian Alvarez.

GGGOOOOAAALLLL!! Man City 2-0 Chelsea | Alvarez

21:16 , Marc Mayo

57 mins: A TAP-IN FOR TWO!

Chelsea had looked decent since the goal and yet get caught on the counter.

Alvarez flings a long ball wide to Mahrez, whose perfect control sets up his shot. Mendy tips it straight at Alvarez, following up.

21:14 , Marc Mayo

55 mins: Watching the replays of that free-kick, Mendy is left on his heels but he had trusted his wall.

The ball flew right over Koulibaly, who didn’t even jump. Criminal.

GGGOOOOAAAALLLL!!! Man City 1-0 Chelsea | Mahrez

21:12 , Marc Mayo

53 mins: From the free-kick, Mahrez buries his effort past Mendy!

21:11 , Marc Mayo

52 mins: Chalobah booked for chopping Mahrez in the D.

21:11 , Marc Mayo

51 mins: Grealish cuts inside to aim a curler towards the far post but he just doesn’t get enoug on it and Mendy parries...

In comes the corner and it’s those two again! Grealish cuts a deflected shot goalwards and Mendy has to get down low to palm it away.

21:09 , Marc Mayo

50 mins: An early pair of changes in the second half from Guardiola.

Phillips makes his long-awaited return from injury alongside Silva. Gundogan and Rodri come off.

21:08 , Marc Mayo

48 mins: Stunning tackle by Cucurella!

The Chelsea man leaps in at the death to stop Mahrez from firing at goal after Kovacic was caught in possession.

Anything but a perfect challenge and that’s a penalty.

A reminder...

21:03 , Marc Mayo

No VAR or extra-time tonight.

Referees’ decisions are final and we go straight to penalties with a draw after 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, at the City ground...

A look at the stats

20:56 , Marc Mayo

Three shots on target for both sides in that half, City edging Chelsea nine to six in shots overall.

No surprise to see the possession numbers 61 to 39 per cent in the hosts’ favour.

City lead seven corners to three, too. 0-0 in goals.

Around the grounds

20:50 , Marc Mayo

Not loads of goals at the break in the third round of the Carabao Cup tonight.

In the other 8pm kick-off, Liverpool and Derby are also goalless.

Half time!

20:48 , Marc Mayo

It’s 0-0 between Man City and Chelsea.

20:46 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: Another promising Chelsea counter falls down as Laporte gets a toe on Kovacic’s lay-off for Pulisic.

One minute added on.

20:45 , Marc Mayo

44 mins: Hall nearly scores his first Chelsea goal as he picks up a fine break, led by Ziyech then moved on well by Pulisic, and jinks past his man... then hits a shot straight at Ortega!

That was the chance of the half.

20:44 , Marc Mayo

43 mins: Kovacic looks gutted as he poaches possession and looks to play in Broja early, with the whole City half to run into.

But the striker is caught flat-footed and cannot collect the pass.

20:42 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: A bit of a lull in proceedings as City keep a foot on the ball while also quashing any sense of Chelsea breaking out on the counter.

It sounds like a fair few around the ground have made the decision to head for a pie but they may want to hold on for a moment, as Grealish hits one from range to force Mendy into a good stop.

20:39 , Marc Mayo

38 mins: Broja makes a low-key appeal for a penalty as Dias kind-of collects the ball with his arm as he slides in on the Albanian in the City box.

No real case to answer, though.

20:37 , Marc Mayo

35 mins: Grealish has been all over Chelsea tonight and Chalobah has to get a good foot on his cross for Mendy to collect.

Lots of balls in from wide for City so far yet no striker regularly popping up to finish them off.

20:32 , Marc Mayo

31 mins: The hosts continue to bang on the door, Rodri laying a cute ball to Lewis on the overlap.

The decent, low and hard cross beats every Chelsea defender... and every City man too.

Meanwhile, Sterling is out to warm up for the visitors and gets a warm reception from the home fans.

20:30 , Marc Mayo

29 mins: City once more find success with the pressing game and Gundogan spins a ball towards Alvarez.

As the Argentine swivels to get his shot off, in comes a flying Koulibaly who successfully steers it wide - but not by much,

20:27 , Marc Mayo

26 mins: Gomez and Grealish are causing real issues for Chelsea’s right flank with Ziyech not really tracking back.

Chalobah has now come over to support Loftus-Cheek but that could lead to a spare man emerging unmarked at the far post for the hosts.

20:25 , Marc Mayo

23 mins: A fine save from Ortega turns Pulisic’s strike away after a run to the 18-yard line on a Chelsea break.

In throwing himself at the shot, Laporte took a knock but looks like he can carry on.

20:22 , Marc Mayo

20 mins: Chelsea give the ball away as Lewis blocks Hall’s pass out from his own half.

Gundogan is there to finish off the quick move but another deflection allows Mendy to claim. That high press again causing problems for the Blues.

20:19 , Marc Mayo

18 mins: Only a yellow card for Koulibaly - was he the last man as he tripped Grealish?

It was outside the box so no double jeopardy, it would surely be a red card if so...

But no VAR tonight.

20:18 , Marc Mayo

16 mins: Palmer is the next to get a shot off, which again hits the crowd and pops up for Mendy to gather. A nice and direct mindset from City tonight. High tempo.

20:15 , Marc Mayo

13 mins: Pulisic has to score!

Ziyech gets in behind down the right and Lewis diverts the American’s effort from the penalty spot towards Ortega for a simple save.

A lively start from both teams.

20:14 , Marc Mayo

12 mins: And there is Hall, dancing around Lewis to dribble into the City half before winning a free kick.

Elsewhere in Chelsea youngster news, Blackburn loanee Harvey Vale has put his club a goal ahead at West Ham!

The two best-paying academies in English football are showing off the weapons in their armoury.

Chelsea have Lewis Hall and Manchester City have Rico Lewis.

Both are 2004 born and competing directly with each other in front of Graham Potter and Pep Guardiola’s technical areas. Fun.

20:12 , Marc Mayo

10 mins: City straight back on the offensive as Alvarez and Dias has efforts denied, before Grealish fires off a long-range hit that flies just wide of the near post.

 (Action Images via Reuters)
(Action Images via Reuters)

20:09 , Marc Mayo

8 mins: Broja goes it alone after nicking the ball off City.

His shot goes high over the bar as he ignores Ziyech to his right.

20:07 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: Lovely football from City, Palmer and Mahrez involved as Grealish cuts a delightful ball back to Gomez.

A teasing cross beats everyone as the hosts settle for a corner - which is cleared.

That was begging for a lanky Norwegian to poke home at the far post. Whisper it quietly, but those moves were also how a certain Raheem Sterling scored a lot of goals for his old club...

Nizaar Kinsella at Etihad Stadium

20:05 , Marc Mayo

Chelsea are playing in a 3-4-3 with Lewis Hall and Ruben Loftus-Cheek as the wing-backs. That’s two midfielders out of position in typical Graham Potter fashion so let’s see if it works.

20:04 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: A 3-4-3 as expected for Chelsea, young Hall in his second appearance on the left of the midfield.

City are already pressing the away team and Mendy takes too long over a kick clear, and it bounces off Alvarez as he chases it down!

Fortunately for Chelsea, the ball bounces harmlessly wide.

Some strong words of encouragement from Pep Guardioal for the Chelsea boss ahead of the game.

“If Chelsea accept my humble advice, give him time and he will do well," said Guardiola.

“They got good results but the way they play, when I saw the game against Brighton that they lost, I saw many things I remember from his period in Brighton. But he needs time, everybody needs time.

“No one has success from day one or two, I have a lot of admiration for his work. What he did at Brighton was beyond exceptional and I’m pretty sure with time he will do a good job, I don’t have any doubts.

“He is one of the best managers, from my point of view, we have in this league.”
