Poor are Rioting over Soaring Food Costs
The spectre of starvation has returned to the world's poor as the cost of food dramatically soars.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has asked the international community to provide the World food programme with all of the $755 million in emergency funds it needs for the crisis.
"Without full funding of these emergency requirements, we risk again the spectre of widespread hunger, malnutrition, and social unrest on an unprecedented scale," Ban said.
Fears about soaring food costs and dwindling supplies have spread fear among the world's most vulnerable, toppling Haiti's government and causing riots across Africa.
