Manchester United Message Board
Over the last two season teams were, more than often putting two players on Ronaldo, thus leaving one Utd outfield player unmarked.
This sesaon Rooney is the most likely player to get that treatment, which will make it hard for him to impact even as much as he did last season.
Certainly Ronaldo made our opponents play differently.
Many people who write on this site will suggest that Nani or Valencia may take that role and they may, but at the moment it is a big MAY, both players are not great yet, they are potential greats, Rooney however is already there.
'Many people who write on this site will suggest that Nani or Valencia may take that role and they may, but at the moment it is a big MAY, both players are not great yet, they are potential greats,' No, that's stating the fu*king obvious. You're a bloody idiot 'clive'. You tell me one footballer who didn't have potential . Some make it, others don't. Nothing is bloody certain you twat.
You could look at it also this way - over his development into the World's best player, Rooney's presence on the field allowed for Ronaldo to really shine. Rooney moves so well and is such an intelligent footballer that other teams have to account for him and that opened up space for Ronaldo to do his magic.
There is stat on the United/Birmingham game facts story where it states that United's winning percentage with Rooney/Ronaldo was 71% but, with just Rooney ... it was 74%. Rooney's precence on the field actually benefited Ronaldo a lot more than it did Rooney so don't get that wrong. Rooney played out of position to accomodate Ronaldo.
Lot of defenders/managers rate him as unplayable when he is on form and playing down the center and he certainly seems to be coming into it at the start of the season.
Now on Ronaldo being missed - isn't it obvious - without argument he one of the 3 best players on the planet at the moment. Any team losing that kind of player is going to miss him.
That missing him is going to be reduced by not only one or two people stepping up. Everyone contributing 1 or 2 goals more than they did last year will mean his goals will be less missed. You are guranteed probably 10 or so those to be replaced simply from spot kicks or free kicks. That leaves some 15-20 goals to be spread across the squad.
Our style will be changing and guess what, other teams will have to adjust to that. Defenders are going to have to get more used to a Berbatov up top and a Rooney more in the middle. Defenses are going to be more stretched because there will be more emphasis on wing play, opening up the middle for the likes of Rooney, Berbatov to operate in. It makes more space for Carrick, Anderson etc to thread passes to the forwards.
Opposing left wingers will have a harder time because now in Valencia they'll have someone who tracks back more. Their left backs will still have to be wary of Valencia's pace, so we don't lose out on that.
We definitely lose out on the fear Ronaldo put in opposing teams but, we can redevelop that as a team which we've been doing as a team long before Ronaldo came and will do long after he leaves.
We are going to have a tough season that's for sure. But, we are United, have the best manager, the most experience and best squads out there.
