The latest to be linked is El-Hadji Diouf. Now here is a guy who, when he was signed for Liverpool following the 2002 World Cup, was meant tio be one of the biggest superstars in the world. Ten years later, his career has failed to even scratch the surface of what was expected of him.
My issue with signing Diouf is not that he is a loose cannon and has fallen out with fans and managers at almost every club he has been at; my issue is that he is yet another potential signing from a club with a losing culture.
As good as Pearce asnd Diouf might be individually, they are free transfers from relegated clubs. We want players who are coming from successful clubs, where winning has been expected, not a complete surprise.
It mirrors the signings this season of Lonergan and Brown, for example.
I would be looking at standouts in League 1 who have helped gain their team promotion, young loan stars for the whole season from top premier league clubs, players from clubs near us in the Championship.
