He may have the No.1 squad jersey, but he has been very much 3rd choice goalkeeper in Paul Jewell's plans until recent events saw him catapulted back into the limelight. And since coming back, he's looked like he's never left!
Arsenal fan here.
Sadly I was never able to see the match today against Newcastle, but I did have the pleasure of seeing some of the highlights today and I must say that I was very impressed with the efforts of your Australian custodian. His penalty save was good, but personally I was raving over his one-handed stop to deny Damien Duff, and his other saves during that period were top-drawer as well! There's no doubt in my mind that he was the difference between the two sides, and the nicest thing about this win is that it keeps the daylight between Wigan and the bottom three.
But now, after this performance, I also do feel that John Filan deserves to be given a longer run in your first team, simply because of his presence and the stability he lends to the defence. I have not really been convinced by Chris Kirkland and although Mike Pollitt is dependable, I'm not too sure he can really come up with such fine performances as that. Especially with the club in a relegation battle, performances such as Filan's today will make a great difference, and if I'm correct he was also the keeper who made the most appearances during your club's promotion season not too long ago. He has been very professional this season despite not getting any playing time, he obviously has the club at heart, and deserves to be rewarded. I do believe he should be first choice for the remainder of the season even after the return of Kirkland and Pollitt, and if he hepls you guys finish strongly, maybe a new contract could be in the offing? I'm sure Paul Jewell must be giving this osme due consideration!
