    Another hat-full of missed chances

The first 20 minutes of the Newcastle game was fantastic. Then as usual we let in a sloppy goal, the heads go down and it's downhill from there.
Am I the only person who thinks Calum Davenport and Hossam Ghaly are a waste of space? I have also noticed that panic sets in whenever we get near the oppositions goal. We need another Teddy Sheringham; someone who's brain can function when they have the ball at their feet.
And (whilst I'm on my soapbox), how long is Paul Robinson going to keep hold of the England No.1 shirt? Not for long me thinks. How many times has he been beaten from long range this season? His positioning is awful.
On paper we have a world class squad. Perhaps the backroom boys are to blame or even Jols tactics. I know we have improved but we can and must do better.
    Your thoughts please.

    • Sitting watching this game I knew that at 2-1 we needed to score a third at that point to win. Im not the manager but Jol should have been more positive and put keane on at 2-1 and really pounded on newcastles defence to finish the game. As it was the game only looked over when newcastle went 3-2 up and you knew spurs just didnt have the guts to get back into it.

Spurs were far the better team in this game no doubt but I agree with previous comments that we are missing a leader on the park, in fact I doubt any of the players are even spurs fans (im thinking of someone like gerard who is die hard liverpool) why cant we get someone in who is die hard spurs?

Spurs have too many gutless fairies who dont give a sh*t about Tottenham, by this i mean Tainio, murphy, Lee, Ghaly and Zakora (who is the possibly a bigger disapointment than postiga).

I predict that we will finish 9th (just)get knocked out of the carling cup at arsenal, well beat cardiff (just) and probably get the the quarter finals. My only optimism is in the Uefa cup where we could suprise a few people, but dont be suprised if we draw and english team if we get past feyenoord and you know what happens when we play english teams away!

All in all a thoroughly disapointing season. Jol shouldnt be proud he should be ashamed that his managed to turn last seasons half decent team into a bunch of medeocre losers.

BTW I hope I am wrong, but ive supported spurs too long to expect any miracles.

      • I am not entirely disappointed with how the season is looking. We are still in 3 cups - I reckon we can beat Arsenal. Doubt we can do Chelsea again. You never know.

I think that we now realise how good a player Carrick actually was at Spurs. We've not managed to replace him yet. I know Huddlestone is looking good, but Carrick was the finished product. I am not slagging Huddlestone off. Just that Carrick was the business. This year, we are in 3 cups. Same time last year, we were in zero. OK, in league we may have had 5 or so more points at the same stage last year. Can you see the positives? I think we are just a bit pissed of seeing the poor away form, and seeing 2 losses at home. COYS.

    • there are a lot of things right with us, however we have become over confident and need to grind out a few wins like last season . we nee TWO quality left sided players . lennon needs to stay on the right where he does his best work, We miss jenas and King big time! Robinson is not half the keeper he was last season. Why don we ever think of playing Keane just off the two strikers with huddlestone Holding at home worth a go. get rid of Lee,Ghaly, bring in if poss Young, Bale,NOT Downing CRAP, We are doing OK but OK is not good enough, We should be at least the 5th best team in the Premiership But its not too late! Still belive we can make chapions laegue with a good run. What do you gutys think?

      • I don't think Champions Leaque is a possible target this year. Let's see, there are only 15 matches left this season. Consider that we manage to win 10 of those and lose the other 5, we will only have 62 points. Would be suprised if we can take the 4th spot with just 62 points.
Top 6 is possible IF we can put together a good run.

But our mentality is not good at the moment, 1 goal in front then everyone seems to think they have already won the game.. everytime it's the same, you are more scared when Spurs is in front then when the score is still level.

    • I have thought the same about Robbo for a while. Cost us a number of points last year with his flapping at crosses. Personally, it does't look like we have a leader on the pitch. Watching Robbie Keane yesterday warming up, he was pointing and gesturing at the players on the pitch, telling them what to do, which is what we need. I'm not saying drop Defoe in place of Keane, but get someone who can shout and bark at people to wake them up. Robbo cant do that from the goal, and Ledders it just far too quiet.

It's also blatantly obsious now that Malbranque isn't a left sided player. He drifts in too much now, which Lennon is tending to do, giving us no width, and having to rely on long hoofed balls up the pitch to try and get onto. Try playing it on the ground, finding space and a killer pass please chaps.

Still in 3 cups, top half of the league, so lets not be too disappointed.

      Kepp the faith.

      • Robbo needs a kick up the rear. He needs to be benched for a couple of games and told you have to earn your shirt, it's not yours by right. I agree we need a 'guvner' as captain, although we haven't had one for some time....

Otherwise the thing that really pissed me off was the showboating after we went 2 - 1 up. Ever heard of controlling the game? holding possesion? Fcuk no! Were tottenham! Maybe we need to change that style a little.

Otherwise lets give the taffys a beating and get back on the winning trail!

      • How did we manage to loose? We were excellent for long periods of the game! Personally, I feel the biggest loss to our squad over the past year or so was Frank Arnesen. If you look at some of the players we have brought post Frank, it is a little worrying albit Berba is an exception. I can't help but feel the strong structure of youth he was building and bringing into the team, has been steadily deteriating. He/Martin seemed to work so well. It also shows why Chelski were prepared to pay 13 mill?? Whats do you think? Still as Lilywhite states: - "Still in 3 cups, top half of the league & Europe, so lets not be too disapointed!"

    • Have we really improved from last season? Results would suggest otherwise. Last year we beat Newcastle at home, Pompey away, drew with Arse, beat Everton (typically, until this year) etc.

We have players till ajusting to the Premiership and too much dead wood in our team - neither Lee nor Assou-Ekotto I would ever consider to be world class, Davenport & Gardner simlpy not good enough, Ghaly IS awaste of space, Malbranque and Tainio are sqaud players, Murphy and Davids are finished.

Maybe Jol is to blame for some of this - why buy and injured Malbranque when we should have gone all out to sign a quality left-winger? Why, at the same time loan out an adequate right-winger in case Lennon got injured (which did)? Why continue to play the cautious tactics away from home when it clearly doesn't work and we end up playing mediocre football and invariably losing?

I thought we were getting it right with our decent run of form before the Christmas period (apart from the Arsenal game), but now it does seem like the same old tottenham - leaking goals and spurning chances. I hope I'm proven wrong, but we have a tough schedule ahead of us with all cup games to play, visits from Man Utd and Bolton and 2 potential banana skins away from home agianst Fulham and Sheffield Utd. We have to start improving or our entire season could be over by the end of February.

    • I agree 100% .Defoe was excellent today huddlestone also and Pascal Chimbonda had the right idea I would also like to slap that wank** Butt.WE need to get three good back players give Robinson a rest and also replace Carrick, this has been our down fall this year we need to get a striker like martins or drogba fast strong and willing.I hope this gives us a kick up the ass and we kick on from here.Teddy is in the past tom is his replacement we need a Jurgen to coach him like he did to Teddy all we will be ok.Also any one else think Andy gray needs to pull his head from his ass
you would think the Idiot played for them gooner up the road.

      • After the woeful display against Everton (Home), and most of our away games (esp. against Bolton, Arsenal, Reading), I wasn't as heartbroken last night.
We didn't play too badly last night to be honest, but defend-wise was quite poor in my view. Left back again was picked by our opponent as the weak spot, the 1st and 3rd goal had something to do with this department. Lee isn't a bad player for assisting our attack but he's too light for our defense.
We also let Newcastle has too much of the ball, esp. towards last 1/3 of the game. I don't think Huddlestone had a good game last night as in he didn't really control the midfield and couldn't get the ball back once we lost possession. And I think Davenport was outstanding last night, has made at least 2-3 important last ditch tackle.
The 2nd goal was world-class if you look at the replays, absolutely top notch.
But I agree Robinson was poor, hadn't really recovered from that England game. Didn't make 1 successful save last night, almost everytime Newcastle had a shot on goal, they got in....
I think the inability to keep a clean sheet, as compared with last year, is one of the main reasons of our "failed" campaign so far.
