I think he's better than his play for us suggested. I know everyone says that strikers are confidence players and need a run before they perform, but that's especially true for Defoe. I think if he starts the next 2 or 3 games for England and plays at least one of them through to the final whistle his international form with explode.
The reason I was angry about Defoe's treatment with us was because Keane could have a shocker (it happens sometimes) and get substituted, Defoe could come on in his place and play a blinder, and this could happen for 4 or 5 games in a row but he still wouldn't get a start. How is a striker supposed to progress and improve their sharpness in those conditions?
Also, I think the claims that he is selfish are completely off. Sometimes when he was coming off the bench he would go for goal instead of passing to someone in an equal or slightly better position than him, but that was becausae he had to prove himself, and I don't think he did it that often. As the little player he's supposed to be the one who gets into position and takes the punts, and quite often they paid off.
One thing I wondered about was his working relationship with Berbatov - A few time I noticed that they'd work a play together and Berbs would basically push Defoe away when it came to goal celebration. Not sure what that was about...
