Nick...you've got to think like a chess player...Chelsea's first offer was low-ball (you never come in with what you would really pay). Levy's statement takes the onus OFF of him if Modric goes, why, you ask? Because for Modric to go at this point he point blank has to request a transfer. Once that happens then the real bidding war begins.
They need to start putting in some iron-clad clauses into some of these contracts, ones that make the player liable for crap like joining a team when they really want to play for another team; a team that didn't want to take a chance on them when they first became available (I heard United had first dibs on Berbatov way back when, but weren't sure if he'd cut the mustard...and I'm sure we weren't the only team that saw Modric's quality when playing at the international level). Pipe dream I know.
I don't think we can answer the question posed by this thread, until it actually happens and we see whatwe're left with (40 mil and Sturridge would be a start and i think a step in th right direction, but not the answer...who could we get for that 40 mil (or 35) that would do the job (and I hope we would have a plan for when we face him as he's talented to the point of scary and would eat us alive - particulalry if the split is acrimonius).
all that matters now is modric himself.
if he is determined to go then we cant keep him.
minimum has to be 35m for him.
if he goes to chelsea then getting sturridge thrown in would be a good move.
i would personally try VdV in modrics role, with sandro alongside him in the ctr. then u have lennon & bale out wide, with 2 strikers upfront.
it might just solve the problem of where to play vdv.
but personally i think modric is our best player & we have to do all we can to keep him.
even if we make a verbal agreement saying if we dont finish top 4 next season we will let u go.

that all makes sense, spursbabe, except for one thing. if modric goes, the floodgates open and he will be followed by bale, v d v et al - letting him go for whatever price sends a signal that spurs management doesn't care that much and other players will notice and follow suit. that's the danger here and i wouldn't be surprised if creeps like ferguson & the chlesea people are playing a psych game with modric with their eye really on bale. the day when ferguson leaves football will be a day when the sport can look forward to a healthier, better future.
I agree Modders has been our best player this season. Plus the Sturridge deal is the only one won that might sugar coat the bitter pill of losing our star man.
However, I'm yet to be convinced that VDV could adapt to fulfill the Modric role. This season they have occupied very similar space on the pitch however VDV's energy levels have been dire! Where as Luka's have been amazing.
I have heard suggestion that VDV was playing with injuries and was just exhausted, I hope that was that case and that we have an improved/invigorated VDV returning, then we may have a ready made replacement, otherwise I'd continue to play VDV further forward.
I really hope Levy/Hazza can convince him to stay with us for at least another year, But the £42k + Europa league, we are paying and offering may not be enough compared to the likely £150k + champions league, Chavs would pay him.
Bring in the financial restrictions!
