  • Just to stick my oar in!!

When Mancini took over at Citeh, people moaned they were defensive and how slow the build up etc. Look at them now.

I know our defence is weak but we are without Kaboul, Bae, Parker, 3 main players, so I will hold judgement on AVB on that.

The players are new to him, they are new to each other too. Soo many gone and 5 new ones arriving in the summer.

He has a different way of playing and I don't think our fitness levels are up to speed to play it yet. So maybe that's why the slow build up play from us most of the time.

Yes some iffy substitutions ( bringing on a defensive mf when we are 1 goal up ) and only ever one striker but so many injuries haven't helped.

I think the only reason Hudd is playing is because of these injuries and (AVB man-management) AVB says to the press how great he has been. Giving him a gee-up.

I think it will take some time and lots of patience from the fans to see any fruition from AVB's tactics and playing style.

But after all is said and done this is supposed to be "A long term project" whether we like it or not!!

    • Amen LTS!

There is a lot to consider before judgement can be passed on AVB or the team and nothing like enough time has been afforded to make a fair assessment!

      • And IF, and it is of course only an IF, the AVB experiment goes even more wrong and we are languishing in the wrong half of the league what price your loyalty then?

IF, there were signs that AVB tactics were working and that the team were gelling and the senior players were publicly coming out in support of AVB - and if he had some sort of track record that supported his success at implementing a new playing strategy in other top flight teams - I would be happy to give him more time.

Your loyalty is based on what exactly? The thought that we are Gentlemen and it would be ever so slightly rude to ditch the poor fellow so soon??

Yes OBRN got a few years of not doing very well at Manure to start off with but that was a different era and Manure had not done that much before so the expectations were very different (can you imagine plain old Alex Ferguson being given 5 years to win anything now if he took over Manure given their recent successful years?), so we can't keep harking on about him and using his time as some sort of ideoligical nirvana.

I won't try and hide it, I don't like him and I am sure that is partly why I would get rid asap but, trying to take my dislike out of the equation, no one has yet to give me any sound reasons (other than it would be rude to ditch him so quickly) for him to be given any more time. Yes, as I have said, we would get some flack (mainly from the Premier League Managers Association) but that would be forgotten quicker than one of Hudds very rare 50 yard successful passes.

        Only time will tell.

    • But doesn't the fact that so many faithfull, previously loyal supporters are unhappy enough to boo prove that in thier opinions something is seriously wrong? They were not booing the team - they were booing the tactics used which resulted in a loss against a team that most would expect to beat. Booing AVB.

I don't agree with booing as it is obviously impossible to filter out booing the manager and booing the team but what other way is there to display your frustration especially after you have paid a lot of money to watch your beloved team? Boycott the place, become a shareholder?

    • Oh, forgot to say, I read quotes in the press today from AVB saying he is thinking about playing Ade with Defoe. Perhaps the booing worked!!

    • Boo'ing is for the Moronic, don't condone it Sfer, its completely inexcusable at this stage of a season and after the considerable changes and injuries we are coping with:

    • Why every time we lose do we blame everything on tactics? Were we complaining when we went to OT and scored three and took the game to MU for all the 1st half? Can we blame tactics for the defeat against the chavs, when the reason we lost was down to Gallas making poor clearances, not even allowing for Walkers moment of madness?. Ok, in the game's against WBA, Norwich, we made defensive changes to try and close the game and it back fired, but a lot off teams make those sort of changes when winning in the last few minutes, but AVB will soon learn we are not capable of keeping clean sheets. It seems to me AVB is trying to make the the team more compact and solid whilst still retaining our quick attacking options, but with the team keep having to change through injuries, cant get a settled side to grow to the system. It would be interesting to know what you would do, when de-foe is your only out and out striker available ( allowing that Ade has been unavailable, and needs to get match fit when he is, so cant be expected to start games ). He could of left Defoe on when he put Ade on ( and I agree I would of ) but we pushed Dempsey more forward with Ade so still had more threat up front which allowed Bale and Lennon to get wider, but it didnt work ( and might or might of if defoe was still on ) but to me that is a tactical change to try and win the game but overall the team just played poor throughout. When do we start questioning the players rather than the manager? All the manager can do is set the team up how he wants them to play, but if they dont perform, is it the managers fault, or does the players attitude have to be questioned. Why was the atmosphere so bad from the very start and like a morgue? It seemed to me that the fans couldnt wait to jump on AVB and are clearly not prepared to look at our injuries and lack of quality in the players we are having to use ( not AVBs fault ). When we get our players back and settled, and then see no improvement, then we can judge the manager at the end of the season and change if needs be, so until then patience is surely called for. For the people who dont like AVB , do you know him? Were you there at Chelsea to actually see what was being said and done? Do you know what remit Abramovic actually gave him when he signed him? Maybe he went about it to quick to soon, but he wanted to stamp his authority like any manager should, but once players rebel you got no chance, unless the owner backs the manager he employed to do the job, which Abramovic clearly didnt ( to friendly with the very players he wanted moved out ) Just some of my thoughts, and not a judgement on others thoughts, we are all fans after all said and done and want the best for our club.

    • Talking lack of strikers takes us back to pre-season. Why get rid of players (let go) - such as Two Saints and Saha when you don't have replacements? Both may have been able to do a job given the injuries and squad. It would have been even worse if Ade hadn't re-signed. But that issue has been covered and I personally don't think the transfers were down to AVB.

Tactics. I didn't think that Daffy for Ade was that bad. The end result was, but like you I could see that Ade could have changed the shape of the team and the game. It just didn't. If it had, AVB would have been a tacky-tickle genius. Now he's just seen as not knowing what he's doing as '...everyone could see we lost the link with midfield...' - but that could have been what AVB was addressing - by getting Dempsey closer and Bale/Lemmon wider. Such are decisions.
I didn't 'like' the decisions earlier in the season to 'apparently' close up shop when we went 1 up - but again - without knowing the intention, it's difficult to judge. Maybe AVB thought the team lacked confidence, and by getting a win and a clean sheet under their belts it would have improved overall confidence for the next game. He may have had umpteen different reasons. Who knows?

As for liking AVB. Most people make judgements on personalities without knowing them. I don't 'like' JT, Rooney, Russell Crowe, Victoria Beckham, Tony Blair, Maggie Thatcher or Daffy much for that matter. I don't know them any more than I have seen their 'personality' appear through words or actions. Don't we all make up our minds without knowing people?

    • Fair enough people judging on personalities, but a lot seem to be judging on whatever went on at Chelsea without having insight. I dont care if he has the personality of a damp squid as long as he's successful for us, and we wont know that until he's had time.

    • Banging Reposte Remmah!

    • Stop the press!!!!!!
      AVB plays 4-4-2!!!!!!
that should cheer a few of you doubters up.
He actually said in the pre-match interview that we had played it so well before and were used to it he would use it last night.
After he said he wasn't thinking of using it all the time, like at Man City, but depending on the game he would use 1 striker system.
      Something along those lines, lol.

    • So,

      lts, Joe, Remmah

still happy with AVB and his tactics after the Citeh game? Notice you have been a bit quiet thats all. From what I could see, having reverted back to one striker and two (if you can count Hudd) holding MF's, we were extremely poor in pretty much every respect.

Ade did ok but was on his own trying to hold the ball up against two good defenders and waiting far too long for any support from MF. Sandro did well but seeing as he was defending most of the time and that is his job he would be expected to do ok. Apart from that, the others looked confused, dispirited and unenthusiastic. I am just glad Citeh had an off day as well otherwise we could of got a real thumping.

Unfortunately, I can only see more of these negative tactics coming from AVB. Still want to give him more time?
