I think AVB did well today.
I think he was right to start Adebayor and Defoe together, and Adebayor had a stupid moment which he'll massively regret, particularly given his lack of first team opportunities.
I think AVB was right to wait until half time to make any changes, even though it put us in a precarious position, and I think both the changes he made and whatever he said to the team at half time were gutsy and the right things to do/say. I thought another option may have been to keep Walker on and push him up to midfield, perhaps on the wing to allow Bale/Lennon to take a roaming role high on the pitch, but I think 2 substitutions was a good psychological move.
I think he was right to replace Hudd with Carroll, and I think he did it at the right time.
Once Ade was sent off we had to go for all or nothing, our players style needed it and there was no way we'd be able to sit on a 1-0 lead, and the second half was possibly the first time this season I've seen us play with real urgency and belief. As I've said before, my concern over AVB's style is that it's boring and zaps some of the drive of the players, but that didn't happen today. If Bale had pulled back to Defoe instead of shooting we could quite easily have been 4-3 (i think - we were at a 2 goal deficit at that point) at 60 mins, and it would have been a different game.
Mistakes were made, but I don't think tactics or preparation can be blamed for any of them, and while embarrassing I'd rather play like that and lose 5-2 than be cagey and doubtful and lose 2-1.
