    Credit where its due

I didn't say he played well - I said he made the difference. As usual, he showed he is too slow to be top PL player and he gives too many free kicks away as a result of that. What that game highlighted to me is when we play with Parker and Dembele together in the middle of the park we are not actually passing the ball forward that much. Parker passes sideways and backwards more often than not and when he does occasionally pass forward it is rarely a good pass. He also suddenly tries these long, desperate dribbles and actually ends up either being tackled or running off the pitch.

Dembele slides past opponents midfield players very smoothly but then runs into a back 4. I have not actually seen him pass the ball forward that much.

When Hudd came on he very quickly picked out Defoe and Bale with passes from midfield and we looked a different side. I haven't changed my mind about Hudd but it made me realise why we have been creating so few chances lately.

As for the slow play, again, if you have players like Parker (who passes sideways and backwards) and Dembele who likes to dribble, you are not going to play quick football are you! Earlier this season we were giving the ball to Lennon and Bale's feet and they were taking on defenders and going around them. When they have not played we have struggled to even make any chances. Adebyor is never going to be quick enough or try hard enough. But what happened against Citeh was that suddenly there was someone who was prepared to knock the ball forward or even over the top for the strikers to get on the end of it - and it worked.

    • SB, Your'e entitled to your opinion on AVB, but I recall one of your post's after about just six game's, that you hope he fail's so Levy can sack him, so I wonder if your personal dislike for him has anything to do with his ability. He has had to deal with a lot of key injurys, and quite a few new player's to bed into the team, and after a shaky start, has kept us up in the fight for CL place all season. Of course, we're all armchair manager's, and think we could pick a better team and be more tactically astute when results dont go our way, but as someone else has said in another post, if you look at many of the goals we have conceded that has cost us points this season, a lot of them have been down to individual errors, rather than the tactics being wrong. Sometime's the player's have to take some responsibilty, ( an example, during the Wigan game, Walker, starting in his right back possition could of passed the ball forward to I think it was Dembele, who was standing wide right, but instead decided to run across the pitch and ended up losing the ball on the left edge of their penalty area allowing Wigan to break and us short of defender's all because a player didnt keep the game simple, and retained his position ) so if we had conceded at that moment, would you say it's AVB's fault, that his tactics are all wrong?. Just a point on Moye's, IMO he has one of the easiest job's in the PL. There is no pressure on him to achieve anything season after season, which is odd considering Everton are a big club, but without the finances, apart from PL status, theres no expectations, whereas at a club like our's, I wonder if he could handle the extra pressure of being expected to achieve certain targets?. He dos'nt strike me as a manager who would suit Spur's style of play over the year's, but more a safety first type of manager who the majority of fans would not like if we lost our traditional style. Having said that, who know's?, he could be great, just as AVB could be given enough time and backing from the board and fan's alike.

      • John, I presume you meant to reply to me rather than SB. I don't ever recall saying I hoped AVB would fail so that he would get sacked. In fact, I do know that I have said I hope he proves me wrong and takes us into the promised land. As for Moyes, again, I don't recall ever having much of an opinion on him. Tactics? I appreciate you cannot account for individual mistakes and errors of judgement on the field. My argument is with who he plays and where. For example, Ade on his own up front does not work for me especially when you have two wide players and no real playmaker. You can't "like" somebody that you don't rate as being good at his job. I don't like AVB and I cannot see what Freund brings to us either. Even if AVB wins the PL and CL I will still not like him. I will appreciate his skills and for taking my football club to trophies but I won't like him. I will just not dislike him quite so much!

    • agreed again sfer. i dont rate hudd but he played really well when he came on. id say defoe made as much of an impact too. his foward runs & movement creates space for others. look at how many breakaway goals involve defoe pulling a defender away. my issue with hudd is defensively he is a liabilty. & his mobility, pace & fitness is poor. just not good enough for a CL league CM. we are more likely to concede with him in our team. but i cant deny his passing is very impressive. i like both dembele & parker. but they dont really compliment each other. individually they are both good but as a pairing they have limitations. still good players to have. i prefer sandro to parker. & i still feel we need to replace modric with a moutinho or banega type player.

      • I said on here several years ago that I did not rate Hudd and mostly I got criticised for it. I agree totally with your assessment of him. On Sunday it paid off but most of the time it doesn't. I just hope that this cameo performance persuades some other foolish club (Fulham are you listening?) to come in and buy him in the summer.

Yes Defoe also made a big difference. Unlike Adebyor, he makes intelligent runs which players like Hudd can use. Adebyor, by contrast, sits in front of the defenders and wants balls to feet. The problem is he is not that good at controlling a ball PLUS we don't have the players (when Parker and Dembele are playing) who have the ability to pass it to his feet when he is being marked. Can you imagine in your wildest dreams Adebyor scoring a goal like Defoe's? I can't.

I think they were hoping Holtby would fill the Modric hole and I am still hopeful that he will. he is taking some time to settle in but he works hard, has a great left foot and is always looking to attack so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

What we do obviously need is another striker to replace Adebyor. Defoe, as good as he is, can't lead the line and Adebyor is not good enough and is too slow and lazy. And, as you point out, its a choice of Parker or Sandro with another central midfielder who can pick out those forward passes and that I am afraid to say, is not Dembele even though I like him.

      • So, you give a guy a break and a bit of credit, he gets another chance and what does he do? You guessed it, reverts back to being a slow plodder who is not good enough for a side aiming for 4th. The Citeh game was a glimpse (mixed up with his faults as well) of what he can do when he is up for it but he reminds me of Charlie Adam. A good season with Blackpool, knocking the ball around at will, then a move to Liverpool and he is shown up for what he is...too slow and not up to top tier football.

Obviously I would love us to be able to pick up enough points to go above Ar$e but my heart and guts tell me it isn't going to happen. Which is more likely....us losing points to Southampton or Ar$e losing points to QPR?

Its been said before and rightly so but we are paying the price for not buying a striker when everybody knew we desperately needed one. We didn't buy a straight replacement for Modric, although I am hoping Holtby grows into that role, Ade is too lazy and doesn't care and we don't have enough players that are up for a fight.

        Its not looking good IMO.
