Of course he should apologise - as a serving soldier in the Nazi Army in Germany and an ex-member of the Hitler Youth, he has a lot to apologise for. However, Mr Ratzinger, perhaps shouldn't after all he is the expert on extreme causes!
The Collins Dictionary states apologise as:
"Forgiveness, beg pardon, express regret"
Why should the Pope apologise to quoting a source of text from medieval scripture? He has nothing to apologise for. The words were not his own as such and they were within the confines of inviting Islamic dialogue to end violence. Ironic therefore, that his invitation has been misconstrued and further violence has resulted from his invitation. Says it all really.
It is unlikely the World will ever receive an apology for the 9/11 and 7/7 atrocities as they were intentional and the Islamic extremists who carried them out are as resolute today as then, that they were just. Don’t ever expect it or hold your breath will you?
