Why nascar has a bigger following in US

and it's a joke that they have to have "hired guns" for the road-courses.

When was the last time a road course 'hired gun' won a points scoring road course race? In my records which go back 20 years all the road course races in the top catergory have been won a Winston/Nextel Cup regulars.

    • Ray Elder was an early "hired gun" and he won at Riverside's road course in 1971 and 72. Elder only ran 31 races in 12 years, mainly at Riverside and Ontario Motor Speedway(was built identically like Indy.) Mark Donohue was the last "hired gun" to win in the Cup Series with his 1973 win at Riverside.
