Seems I've seen a lot of threads talking about how crazy it was to replace one of the best passers of the ball with a player who can't even play yet due to injury. I've also seen a couple threads from the usual suspects of why we should sell Gerrard as his value will be sinking soon. So thought I'd take both on.
First off, lets put aside what choice we had in sell Alonso due to the fact he had his heart set on Spain, and Real had their heart set on him. The question is how best to deal with the situation.
Short term I'll agree its a bit of a strange move going for an injured player. But then you don't buy a 24 year old just for a couple months, you buy him for what he can bring to the club over the next 3-6 years. But, even saying that Aqualani is no replacement for Alonso. Alonso was a good holding midfielder, with a great passing range. Aqualani from what I know of him is more of an attacking central midfielder.
That brings me to my second point, Gerrard. Yes Gerrard is advancing in age, and cannot continue to play at the level he plays now forever. Sooner or later age will catch up, and his value in the market will drop. But will his value to us?
Think about Gerrards strengths, and think what will happen to them as he gets older. The two main problems older players face is a loss of pace, and the inability to play multple games with minimal rest between them.
The loss of pace will hurt him, so once this starts I doubt we'll see him up next to Torres that often. The need for more rest however can be managed by Rafa's famous "rotation" policy, and or by retiring from International football, which I think is likely after this coming summer.
So what are you left with? A player who may not run that fast, but has a great head for the game, is a great tackler, and an impressive distributor of the ball. Sound a bit like Alonso? Maybe even better than Alonso.
So by replacing Alonso in a few years with Gerrard, and pushing Aquaman further forward, I'd say we may have not only made the team better, but also extended Stevie's career.
I've not been reading your board lately, but if some of you are even thinking of selling Gerrard you must be mad!
He's the heart and soul of your team and will be for a few more years yet, he would walk into any team in the world; any team. That's from a united fan.
Your right to, eventually you'll just drop him back a bit, but I think he could have had one more season behind Torres, at least one more season. He was phenomenal for you in the link up role in the hole.
Selling him would be madness. Not so sure he'd want to leave now anyway. If he was going to, he would have done a few seasons ago when Chelsea put a bid in.
I hope Aqualani is gonna be worth it... with the money that was spent on an injured player.. as he was and an unknown to the EPL.. Much is expected of Aqualini.. I just hope this "class made of glass" claim made by Roma fans isn't true.. or isn't as bad as they say. Or I fear he'll be in the treatment room more than on the pitch..
So time will tell I guess.
At least for now our league position isn't too bad.. Aqualini may set the EPL on fire and he could be the bargain of the season.. Lets hope so...

I remember a long long time ago (1956) Liverpool shelled out the princly sum of £12000 on a welsh international centre forward called Des Palmer. In his last match before injury he'd scored a hat-trick but was just recovering from a cartledge operation when we took the chance to sign him up..........he never ever played for our first team. At the end of that season the manager that signed him got the bullet too. Dear oh Dear.....still it wasnt too long after that we got Bill Shanks.....omens?
Agree with almost everything but I don't think Aquilani will move into Gerrard's position ever. That's just not what he is. He is a central midfielder with an attacking mentality but not pacy or adventurous enough to play as a forward.
D STEER..Your a great man for the conjecture arent u ? Buying ACQUILANI was a mistake we need quality to replace Alonso NOW ! not half way through the bloody season. I care about NOW not 5 or TEN ,? seasons down the road ! When Benitez arrived he got from me as much support as anybody gave I was fully behind the man BUT his ineptitude in the transfer market the money he has cost the club as a result his INfamous rotation policy HIS NEGATIVE TACTICS his predictability his incredibly stubborn nature and refusal to learn from or even acknowledge his glaring tactical mistakes his pathetic record on substitutions and hisinability to keep it simple and his ionsistence on overcomplicating every little thing plus his ill timed outbursts in the media ultimately convinced me that this man is a buffon and not the man to lead us to that elusive 19th Title therefore I had to advocate he be sacked and King Kenny appointed immediately if not before...thus seeing us return to the true STYLE of Liverpool FC ANDthe chance of a real tilt at that 19th Title before the Mancs eclipse us under SAFs stewardship and please dont quote me how long it took SAF to win something its a pretty tired old chestnut .
wE NEED TO TAKE OUR FOOT OFF THE BRAKES PEDAL TO THE METAL AND ...GO FOR IT ! BUT it aint going to happen while Benitez is at the helm ...would love to have to eat my words but check what we achieve by seasons end and unfortunately I feel I will be proved right but u will still be prepared to advocate giving this guy another five years Im sure..thats your right. But I find the IN RAFA WE TRUST BRIGADE pretty pathetic.

You are wrong when you talk about Rafa's "ineptitude in the transfer market"
You are only seeing what you want to see. Would you call Rafa inept for bringing onboard Reina, Aurelio, Insua, Benayoun, Agger, Skrtel, Torres, Kuyt, Mascherano, Riera, Johnson...
You laugh at the so called Rafa's brigade, but you sound like you hate Rafa as if you were a Man. Utd fan. If you consider yourself a LFC supporter, who is doing a better job at supporting the club, you or Dsteer?
Superbly put and heartfelt post from you zoggo, and as top poster and leader on here for many TROPHYLESS seasons, I fully agree with all of it.
Don't bother wasting your time with STEER the blind deaf and dumb pr1ck mate - this MORON never learns and NEVER EVER WILL as his monotonous posts PROVE day after day.
Remember mate, this is the same dumb pseudo-yank tw@t who refused to slate SISSOKO, KEWELL, LETO, PENNANT and now raves about... LUCAS hahahaha. He's never been to Anfield or even seen the club play in over FORTY YEARS! LOL
I see even armchair idiot has lost the faith now - fcuking hypocrite, but as for dsteer... you can't polish a turd lad, so just laugh at and MOCK him like his wife, family and I do LOL
I TOLD YOU Muppets years ago that under fatlad we would NEVER win the league and with over EIGHTY signings and ZERO TROPHIES in four years to show for the MILLIONS spent... that's the reason WHY your leader P & S is hands down Top Dog in this kennel............. choke on it losers.
Todays LFC fans = used to and accept mediocrity.
Wrong, Alonso did not leave because he dreamed of becoming a galactico. He left because he was disrespected when Rafa went after G. Barry. Let's be honest, Xabi was betrayed by Rafa and the fans. I don't blame Xabi one bit, who can?
Second, on your Xabi/Steve comparison. Alonso has never played the role of attacking midfielder, that role is much better suited to SG. Stevie would be too confined playing Xabi's role, he would be bored to death. You are distorting the facts to justify Xabi's absense from the club. Neither Gerrard or Aquilani can replace Xabi.

Well we'll see what Aquilani can do when he's played a few games for us then we can see what he's capable of.. until then we're all hoping he's gonna be the miracle we all need at LFC..
A lot of pressure on the guy whose yet to kick a ball for us yet..
It does amaze me reading these messages on here how easy people change their mind.
1. P&S you are a Man U Fan and you stated that with no uncertainty so whats the point of your drivel and "My club" etc etc go back to Man U board,
2. When Xabi was having a bad time just about everyone on here wanted him gone and slated the guy, then when he goes he is suddenly the best player and Rafa should be shot because he left. Rightly or wrongly Rafa was going to bring in Barry but that made Xabi step up to the mark and play as he should.
3.The transfers Rafa has made are not always through choice, he is limited to what is at his disposal so he buys what might be young players who will come good, but that is high risk although cheaper and who is to say that if he goes and pays top dollar for a proven name that they will succeed at LFC. Look at Keane.
I agree with D Steer on this because a player has been bought in although injured, whats to say that he wont be tommorrows star, after all if we look back on this very board majority were slagging Rafa for buying Torres as an unknown.
GET BEHIND YOUR TEAM AND MANAGER AND I AM SURE THAT WE WILL FIND SUCCESS, after all which manager wants to say they failed, on that point wasn't it P&S and crew who were all crying out for Scolari to be our manager - enough said.
