His defending on the first goal was abysmal, his goalkeeping (Jones or Gulasci to the glass empty brigade) was shocking on the second.. His first touch has also been atroscious in the box today as well..
These are all PHYSICAL elements that say Sack Rodgers!
In more polite, sweet, and pleasant terms that won't make some cry, this is a shocking performance, AND credit to Oldham for their performance! This is why 7 Prem teams are no longer dancing, and 2 others took about 90"+ to get their way through..
(Just an opinion, this will galvanize everyone ahead of our league match, though that shouldn't be said, or needed)
Is it a poor team selection though? Or is that just in hindsight?
Those players should have been able to comfortably beat a team a million places below us in the league. I mean, apart from Wisdom and Robinson, they're all full internationals aren't they?
What we have learned is that Coates isn't good enough and if we can get 7 mil for him from Gremio, do it tomorrow!
For those that say Carra should have played from the start, isn't it obvious he will be picked against Arsenal and City?
I say this again - the players let us all down, Brendan played a team that should have battered Oldham. I'm not a yes man for him, but it proves the squad needs some serious additions to bump up the quality. Some of the those players were a disgrace! Do they want to be first choice or not? They need to ask themselves that I think.
Lots of credit to Oldham of course.
I didn't say it was a poor side - I said the defence he picked was a poor selection. I thought I made clear in my initial post that I said before the game that I would have picked Carra alongside such an inexperienced line-up - was that not clear enough? I note that you think Carra also worthy of a bit a sarcasm ... "all his yelling and screaming would have kept the score to 3-2" - not a great way for a supporter as good as yourself to describe the talents of one of our best ever servants.
As for yet more sarcasm Jason - maybe you should try accepting that as a fan I am allowed to offer a criticism of our manager without incurring your ire? I watched the game with three other 'pool fans, all of whom are big BR supporters and all of whom thought he got the selection wrong before the game kicked off. Should I tell them that they are stupid too?
But tell me Jason - without sarcasm if you can manage it ...
if BR got the selection & tactics right, our players put the effort in and they are so much better than Oldham's players ...
Why did we lose the game deservedly?
Not in hindsight from me or the others I was watching the game with.
The side he picked, in particular the defence, lacked experience. They have talent but that talent has to be nutured carefully in my opinon. Throwing them into to such a tie without a natural organiser was a big gamble that back-fired.
On paper the names on Liverpool's team sheet should've been good enough. However, tactically they were the wrong combination... Playing Suarez, Sterling, Sturridge AND Borini all at once probably felt like a goalfest on paper, but in fact it just left the midfield weak and that put extra pressure on the young defenders. Robinson, Jones and Coates were were not up to the job unfortunately.
The moment Gerrard and Downing came on, Liverpool were able to control the midfield and the game completely changed. Sadly Oldham had already scored 3 goals by that point. Hopefully big lessons learned today.
You have a serious set of stones buddy..
As for yet more sarcasm Jason - maybe you should try accepting that as a fan I am allowed to offer a criticism of our manager without incurring your ire?
For whatever length of time I've been here, I've been noted as a sarcastic person, and usually I intend it to be humorous, obviously not in this instance, but you seem to either ignore or not able to decipher the difference, for which I cannot apologize..
But for you to say you're not allowed to express yourself or criticize without incurring my ire, is about as hypocrital as it gets.. I commented (sarcasm noted) directly to the thread, on my own, not intended at anyone, and YOU then singled me out, and then followed up with letting me know the stars you gave me for it.. Did I say your name? Did I mention you? Did I reference to what I expect your synopsis or opinion of the team or game was? N. O. NO NO NO.
It's clear you don't like my style, and a few others, though it seems a fair share don't mind it, agree and even manage to see the humor or demeanor in which I intend it, so again, I can't help you there.
Here's a couple of black and white facts from today.. Wisdom was terrible, Coates was diabolical, Jones should be taken behind the barn where the injured race horses go, and Sterling, Sturridge, Borini, Henderson contributed absolutely nothing going forward, yet, they're the same players, including Jones and Wisdom who've been included in battering's of Norwich 5-0, Sunderland 3-0 and someone else in the recent trail.
As for Carra, he's been a brilliant servant to the club, but I personally do not trust him in any game anymore. That's ME, that's my opinion, that's my preferfence... is that ok with YOU? He also, presumably might have been saved for the minnows coming up named Arsenal and Manchester City.. Heard of them? Have you considered that? Either way, whatever the reason, X amount of years doesn't warrant anything if someone doesn't think you can do the job, but again, he normally starts these games as he did Mansfield, so would it make normal, half witted sense to assume Rodgers gave thought to that and had a reason? Unless of course, you were privvy to that and know better and can enlighten us all? If so, please indulge..
And, for the last time, I'd never suggest putting me on ignore, but if you disagree with my view of the team, Rodgers and direction that's one thing, but if you dislike the manner in which I type in some instances that's another, and to be quite Frank (who's Frank?... get it?) for you to make the statement that you did, quoted above and then use it as the benchmark for how I should talk to appease your liking, is a very poor indictment of you indeed..
To then follow it up with the stars thing is quite sarcastic and ironic isn't it? I said nothing of course, but credit to you for staying the course, because I didn't realize someone could cry so much, so often, so routinely, so categorically consistent and rhetorical, on a message board. Well done indeed..
Again, to be Frank (who's Frank.... get it?) If you don't like it, or me, then figure it out.
PS 27 negative stars and smileys for whatever.. =)
Jason...what I would say to that ? ...is get rid of this clown Borini asap ! This guy was yet another rip off of club funds by AS ROMA compounding the Aquillani farce and worse still aided and abetted by Rogers who contrived to have the club shell out 10 mill plus increased salary over what hed been getting at Swansea plus Rogers had contrived there to have him on ...LOAN ! So no money lost by Swansea and 10 mill lost by LFC because i cant see anyone wanting to give us anything at all for this clown can u ?
Far be it for me to try to cheer you all up, and as much as I enjoyed the last half hour and was a confirmed and lifelong Oldham fan by the end, but had Gerrard's screamer (that I told my daughter was coming real soon) gone in five minutes before the end, do you think the conclusions would all be the same?
It's a genuine question. These cup games are pure banana skins. Norwich lost to Luton yesterday, Spurs lost to Leeds, Chelsea nearly went out to Brentford. The opposition may be from a lower league but what they lack in skill they make up for in passion and adrenalin on the day. How many times has it been said "if they played like that every week they wouldn't be going down" or in that division or whatever?
The conditions weren't good, (although not as bad as the wreck Chelsea played on) and things didn't go right for you. But had Gerrard's shot dipped in or one of the other rebounds gone in, would the conclusion be the same?

We can all play 'what if'.
What if Baxter hadn't tried to be clever in chipping Jones, and the other forward not missed his sitter, etc. Oldham seemed to have the clearer chances; Liverpool's were all scambles in the box.
Mine would have been Robert.
I think he made a mistake in selection and, had Gerrard got an equaliser, I would still have thought that.
I've been around long enough to know that, even if you pick your strongest team, these things can happen. It's just my opinion that he got it wrong on the day.
Fair comment Robert but for me it's clutching at straws. We were beaten fair and square by a team who believed they could win, defended like terriers and chose tactics which unsettled the opposition. No excused, it was a defeat and could easily have been five or even six three counting as a goal gerrards bar strike!
