Team to face West Brom at Anfield?

There is no easy game anymore these days. Oldham showed us, QPR held City and won at Chelsea, Southampton outplayed Utd @ OT, and Wigan pull off miracles year after year..

That said, we started off bad against these guys, and they're in a bad run right now, but that's what makes it dangerous, and where we tend to have banana peels. Lukaku gave us a nightmare when he came on, while down to 10 men, and I recall Carra beaten by him a few times.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was in, but on the flip, this is the first kick up the backside I can remember Skrtel getting, and he is too good to not get out of this, plus like you say, @ Zenit, then Swans, so I'm sure they both play and even Agger may need a blow considering his freakish health !

Grobbelaar, Carra, Borini, Shelvey, Sterling, Allen, Assaidi (think he's been in training, if not, then Suso or Wisdom.

    • Hi Jase, think you misinterpreted my first sentence, I was reffering to the team selection being an easy one rather then the game, on the contrary, it worries me greatly! The only times I have actually bet on us this season have been Mansfield and Norwich, that tells you I am not one for complacency!

I absolutely agree, they are in a rut but so often over the years, we have provided the boost (or corner turn) to out of form clubs and individuals.

I am a little stuck on the Carragher issue now, I never wanted him near the 11 before but it is so hard to appreciate vocality and organisational qualities from a tv screen or even amongst a noisy crowd. All of a sudden having been pretty decent individuals, our defence is now desperately quiet and it seems we need Carra, such a quickly fickle game! I think it would be very unfair to take Carra's starting spot away from him now without a slip up, whilst I don't really know what Skrtel had done wrong in the first place.
If anything, neither he or Agger have been completely commanding but as you say, perhaps this is the Downing/Henderson/Enrique style kick up the butt.

Another thing I found quite interesting was how Hendo started centrally against Arsenal with Suaro wide left then they switched roles for Man City though they both move about quite a bit.

      • Hey Hobs mate,

I read it both ways, sorry if it seemed I was suggesting you considered them an easy one.. I agree, the first 11 is almost as easy as it gets aside from this Carra/Skrtel quandry..

Considering we have 3 games in the week, and 2 involve very physical sides in West Brom and Zenit, that's where I'd tend to really fancy Skrtel (while I acknowledge I always would), but perhaps Carra goes again, though between he and Agger, they aren't the commanding duo who could stone wall Lukaku and some of their big bodies on set pieces.

I'm actually thinking, like what Miguel seemed to suggest, perhaps we go Carra and Skrtel for WBA, so we have Carra in his form, and Skrtel for his strength/skill, and then come Zenit, we have Skrtel/Agger, and maybe the same for Swans who represent alot more pace and trickery.

My guess on Skrtel, based on his performance vs Oldham and that he's not a very vocal guy despite looking like an axe murderer, is a kick up the butt, and because Agger is always screaming (I don't know what about) we had 2 back there for the Arsenal/City games..

Ironic how we speculated why he wasn't used in the Oldham match, and then poof.. Carra starts our toughest back to back away games!

That was quite a gamble imo, and I think credit to BR in making the decision, and obviously alot of credit to Carra too..

As far as the front/attacking players go, I just tend to draw it up as the 4-2-3-1 with Jordan advanced, but you're right, it doesn't seem to matter, though Arsenal, I think Suarez was lined up on Sagna by design and it worked well. The way it seems lately, we tend to find anyone having a chance or two running free in the box, even Agger ! It's pretty exciting and unpredictable!

      • Skrtel's situation isan interesting one considering he's been a constant over the last season or two (and longer) and its Agger that's been out, usually through injury. 3

if Carragher's playing well then he deserves his place. The vocal side is certainly important. Moreso as Lucas would benefit fom someone behind pointing out the holes to him. I suspect Allen would have also benfitted from that.

West Brom are going through their traditional Winter Wobble although Spurs struggled to break them down. This game makes me nervous. They have that physical threat (with pace) up front you mentioned, they frustrated Spurs for long periods and they beat us comfortably in the first game of the season. That will give them some confidence and the wobble wont go one forever. They're decent side! Honestly, this gives me more concern than the Villa game and we all know how that one turned out.

Our midfield needs to be super tight and Johnson in particular better keep one eye behind him when he pushes forward. He was caught out of position by West Brom earlier. I'll take some comfort in our covering midfield core of Lucas and Gerrard who seem to be working quite well at the moment.

        Tough one I think.

    • GROBBELAR???? Jason. You been on the pop?

Joking apart, I´d put Skrtl in and leave Agger on the bench. Otherwise the same.
