  • Saw the game (well, most of it..couldn't keep my eyes open as I watched the re-airing of it (live airing, I was still at work).
Funny camera angles for this game...it looked almost pitch level and made everything look congested.
Overall, it was a typical AVB-led Spurs performance...3 wicked goals (I have to give the edge to the Lyon fella's goal as it came from open play...not taking anything away from the two vicious dead-ball strikes by Bale, but that laser of a shot was class).
Not much else to say; Vertonghen stepped in front of at least a dozen through balls, usually around the half-way line...that high line worries the heck out of me! Gallas looked like he had a decent game, although it was his headed clearance that set up their goal (and I remember him doing that a number of times before, before he went out injured). Our defence made another one of their plays look Maradonna-esque as he went on a mazy run through about four of them and smashed a shot that Friedel did well to palm over. Oh and Bale misses another open goal..the one our last match was on his right foot, going away...this one? he would have done better using his right foot, but opted for the left and totally screwed it (he did have a defender putting him off at the same time to be fair, but if GB is heading for stardom, then he's got to be as clinical in open play as he's been from free-kicks of late)
Lyon, while they had their chances, didn't really look that sharp of a team. They may look totally different in the return leg - 1-0 to them will send us out...so it's imperative that we cancel that away goal out, and go from there. Lyon's dilemma is to attack a their peril, knowing that our counter is lightning quick, so I'm guessing a cagey affair in France.

    Bale brace - another win

JL I hear you about the Bale show...unfortunately that's what it is at the moment. Also, while he's brimming with confidence he won't be laying many chances off to teammates...comes with the territory I suppose.

SB - Thanks for asking about my kid - seems to be turning the corner (it took, in part, me scuttling his trip to Vegas with me, for his 21st...that and a few other things).

Grid Iron - well as most of my years in the States have been spent in New Jersey, the Giants have always been my team...but as I live in Maryland now...Baltimore County in fact, it was hard not to get swept up in SuperBowl fever like everyone else in the city...so I was backing the Ravens all the way. Good game - I think the Silly-cone Valley nerds knocked out the power grid with a hack - wink...but it didn't work. Everyone but the City of Baltimore wanted the 49-ers to win; and had I still been living in NJ, I probably would have too! (Lastly, if Beyonce's half-time show didn't knock the lights out, a few piddlin' floodlights shouldn't!)

  • I was very nervous going into this game (predicted a 2-2 draw, unusual for me when I'm nervous, usually not so generous). Newcastle on a high from beating the chavs...new players revving them up and the fact that they beat us with old players on opening day! They were nowhere near the team that played last week (and even then gave us a run for our money).

So, yet another "not-so-great" performance by us and yet another victory (10 games on the bounce and no losses, I think).

Positives...GB was his usual marauding self...funny though, I think their keeper might have done better on both of the goals he scored (certainly the wall should have helped on the first one)...the second one went through his legs after being left wide open...but Bale didn't go for the far corner, more kicked it at Krul than anything. The save he made at the end seemed a much tougher proposition.

Aaron Lennon - I saw the Mighty Mite make about 4 clattering stand up tackles on various Toon players...and get back to support the defense on numerous occasions. Not a lot going forward, but did everything else right.

Holtby - once he gets his shooting boots on straight, he'll be Mega!. We could have been 3 up on his missed chances alone, by the end of the first half!

Daws - saved our bacon more than once with his blocks (got a bit unlucky with their goal and the deflection away from Lloris).

The rest...defense was up and down, at times stretched and shaky, other times impregnable...we definitely benefited from the Toon lad that went off injured...it didn't look like much, hope he's alright. On the other hand, how the hell did Dembele (more on him in a minute) carry on after that "red card" tackle from Cabaye? Well, he did eventually go off hobbling (we're falling like flies!)

Parker was lively, but wasteful; Adebayor gives us a better target up front than Dempsey, although Dempsey didn't do too badly (still not quite there and surprised to see him go the full 90 after a World Cup qualifier in mid-week...in which, he scored). Hopefully Ade brings his A-game to the next fixture as I'm sure he'll start.

I've been happier when Ade's been on a losing team (when he played for the Goons heh heh heh) ;-)

Ever since the News Of The World scandal, no ones tapping phones, hence, no wild rumours this transfer window...and what rumours there were (did you hear the one about the Bale for D. Villa and cash deal) so outrageous as to not even stir interest.

    Quiet...too quiet!

  • Bad news...hopefully with Scotty Parker back we'll not skip a beat...but I'm not counting on it, Scot's always been a bit brittle...panic buy time? (and who?).

    Happy New Year soppy!

AVB - jury' still out, we're not much better or worse than this time last year, so we'll see if he gets named as a possible Portuguese National Team Manager and we fall to bits again like last season (or we actually make the CL...3rd place would be nice...but not holding my breath for it.

Agreed BY - I was pleasantly surprised by the signing; Friedel's a good professional, and a realist (his age).

Another good win today also (Sunderland away...I've been singing "Jingle Bells" based on our last to games).

But instead of Noel for the next game I'll be singing the dirge, No-Bale (another ref's decision going against us...contact in two places on that "dive"...should have been a penalty).

So I go off in search of the source of this news and see a bunch of sports blogs and nothing else...so, lts, I wouldn't hold your breath (there's one that says w're in for Wilfred Zaha to, for 8 mil...again, blog talk.
Two weeks into January when both have gone elsewhere the main press will be talking about how they both "snubbed Spurs" eventhough there was nothing to the rumours to begin with (it's called setting up your story!).

    Of course...I could be wrong ;-) ....

Well, I did see the game in the end(not the same watching a taped live game...you just want to fast forward to the best bits!
So yes, once again 1st half, decent, second half, not so much! Fulham were knackered maybe...but unlike them, we had two midweek matches in a row (clean sheet draw away to Lazio the week before...which we followed with the win over West Ham...then got lucky for another mid-week win (or maybe Liverpool just aren't that good!) and followed it up with an away win to Fulham.

Results are good, preformances are sketchy at best...but all things considered (we still haven't seen Scott Parker this season and our No. LB is out for goodness how long), so maybe we're just catching our purple patch early (maybe with everyone back fit and a sweet pick up in January we might be able to have both good performances and good results regardless of luck and bad calls and all the rest.

  • I know he's got his detractors, but he's a Spurs player through and through...by his own admission he never wanted to go to Pompey when he did, and also by his own admission was delighted to get a second nibble in the lily white shirt...now he says he wants to end his career wih us...with all the chopping and changing of players for...more money, or more opprotunity, I doff my hat to the one we call Daffy!

Game break down please, I didn't have a chance to check us out via online stream. It sounds like we did less and got gifted more in the second half...what was the real story?

Alan Gilzean was the prototype Berbatov..but with class! Very slick and stylish, great in the air (I think he practically invented the flick header...I don't remember near post corners before he came about (probably because I was too young! ;-) ), but he'd eat them up all day long. Wore No. 10 I think (correct me if I'm wrong gang!).

Oh and another good win tonight (what the hecks Bale doing scoring own goals...I thought the idea of him on the wing was to keep him away from our goal (chuckle...kidding!).

After finishing 4th, we invariably don't do so well the following season (of course I've only got one instance to base that on)...looks like we're on our way to mediocrity again.

As mentioned it was just a handful of players that could hold their heads up after this one.

The manager...another coward in a long line of cowardly managers (that is, a manager who's afraid to let his lions loose and go win the game...he got lucky once with this tactic of defending a slim lead, but he's failed a number of times already with the same cowardly approach). Spurs have never really been known as a team with a olid defense in recent times, but we can usually be relied on to create chance after chance and in some cases convert more of our chances than the other team does their's. With AVB not even that is happening anymore...we're now 7th and sliding...the next few games we'll be just as difficult for us as this one was and I really can't see us getting much from them, if anything!

Not sure what the right thing is to get things moving in the right direction...firing AVB doesn't really sound like the answer...maybe having a word with him about horses for courses..Moyes scouts teams before he plays them and sets his team up accordingly, I would have thought any manager worth his salt would be doing the same thing (if ours is, he's not learning much).

We do have injuries (I say our midfield improves right away of the same Scott Parker that was running the show before his injury, returns...ditto Kaboul. If this Dembele "hip thing" isn't too severe (they're treating it with therapy because surgery doesn't cure his aliment...did we buy a crock?) then some creativity comes back (where's Sigurdsson?). 4-4-2 at home is another thing he might want to try (we didn't look so great in that formation in the Europa this past week...but we outscored the opponent (also a bit weak), which proves my point).

Come on you Spurs!! (get it right, and soon!)

AVB needs to grow a pair and let the team play...we're basically an attacking team and that's usually based on a midfield with skill players in it (when was the last time anybody here can say we had a top-notch defense?). Yes we have speed, but you can't always depend on counter-attacks...its going to be a long season if this keeps up is all I can say.

On the personal front, thanks for the words of hope. I was no shrinking violet myself, growing up, but a an older peer who was a bit of a "bad man" took me to task when he heard I had a brush with trouble...I'm hoping there's someone in my son's life that can get through to him the this guy got through to me.

Superstorm Sandy came barrelling up the coast...I lost power here for a shortwhile...but luckily where I'm located while coastal has a series of "switchbacks" that protect land from any tidal flooding...a little further east of me, they weren't so lucky, and as you may have heard the NJ shore as we knew it simply does not exist anymore.
The election...well, it's squeaky bum time again for me...if Romney gets it, he'll most definitely pull funding of federal infrastructure projects (I'm currently on one, and if you guys on here remember two years ago I had one snatched from under me, again due to a changing of the guard, that time at the state level (each state has its own governemnt that's set up in the same way the federal goverment is; congress and senate, with the Governor being the state equivalent of the President).
In the federal governement the US Congress has a Republican majority while the Senate has Democrat majority. So bills and laws start with Congress either by the majority party or the minority party and to pass to the Senate a majority has to back the bill...with the Republicans hellbent on getting Obama out they've basically squashed just about everything he's tried to do (except right at the beginning when the Dems had both houses). So yes, his effectiveness has been severely muted by the opposition, and the only way to reverse that if he wins this election and its too close to say who, though I'm extremely worried about what I hear "in the street"...is that the dems a majority in both houses. Otherwise its 4 more years of static.

(Anyone who knows more than me on this subject, feel free to chime in and correct me (also..please excuse the non-football nature of 3/4 of this post).

Thanks for that...just read the match report on here, and now yours...sounds like we didn't show up. Not sure why it's still fairly early in the season, but something's missing in our play (we always play 4-4-2 ay home and as a result we put most visitors to the cosh...but it seems that AVB is erring on the side of conservatism, home and away, regardless of opponent...NOT GOOD.

Well, I have to put it into perspective as I've just finished a 2 hour family intervention involving my son...a win would have made my disposition a little sunnier...but my kid getting the point of this life would do me much better...WIP (Work In Progress)...wish me luck.

Well, if I'm not mistaken, that's two wins after a Europa League Thursday night game...bit diferent from us eh. (And welcomed too!). Also like the fact that we scored second half goals, shows that we still have something left in the tank.

Now, Hugo Lloris got the start...what was the scuttlebutt on that...broke Friedel's consecutive games streak with seemingly no injury involved...Anyway, while Villa are not the Villa we used to know, AVB looks like a managerial genius considering Lloris now has a game and a shut out under his belt.

I didn't see the game but heard that we ran them ragged, especially in the 2nd half...hopefully one of you will give us non-game seeing types a run-down on how things went. (Actually, apart from the League Cup match, this was the first match of Tottenham's that I didn't see on the box (saw both Ropey League games too).

Where does that put us in the league? 3rd until the United v United game is over (well for all intents and purposes, it is over), so...

Ahhh, so I'm not going crazy...any manager worth his salt will be able to set his troops up to take advantage of that (United just didn't have the killer finisher as in past encounters...well they did, but we kept them relatively quiet - did you see the clattering tackle Gallas gave RVP!).

My problem with the set up is that its reactive...the supply comes in a steady stream, and that's what we need to stop.
