Live Commentary

  1. - Full championship points will be awarded as the race had run two-thirds distance - that keeps the title in the balance, though Lorenzo remains 23 points ahead with two races left to go. Thanks for joining us, and we'll see you next week for the race in Philip Island, Australia.

  2. - THE RACE HAS BEEN CANCELLED! Dani Pedrosa is declared the winner ahead of Jorge Lorenzo.

  3. - This is crazy! It's absolutely torrential and practically dark now at Sepang.

  4. - Still no closer to a decision, but the 'pit lane is a river' according to our sources down on the track.

  5. - Skies still gruesome - hard to see this clearing before it gets dark in Malaysia.

  6. - "Race re-start for 7 laps to be confirmed depending on weather evolution" is the official notice from MotoGP organisers right now.

  7. - Organisers have currently counted back to the last full lap completed by everybody, which was lap 13 - but there's as yet a chance that action could restart for a few more laps if the rain abates quickly.

  8. - Bad news for Dani Pedrosa: he has the win, but the way things were going it looked like Lorenzo was either going to come off, or get overtaken by Casey Stoner. As it is, Lorenzo remains favourite for the title.

  9. - RED FLAG! THE RACE IS OVER! With conditions worsening all the time and several other riders coming off around the track, the marshalls have little choice but to call a premature end to proceedings as Pedrosa and Lorenzo had begun their 15th laps

  10. - PEDROSA ALMOST LOSES IT! Rain hammering down again now and Pedrosa loses it at the end of the start-finish straight, pulling off a miracle save to stay on and get round the corner somehow, with Stoner right up on his tail!

  11. 14/20 Stefan Bradl has also gone out after losing it under breaking - the rain has restarted, and the grip conditions have caught three riders on the hop.

  12. - Ben Spies is being taken to hospital for checks on his shoulder, we're just hearing.

  13. 13/20 Pedrosa has pulled out 2.5 seconds at the front, Lorenzo remains 5 seconds clear of Stoner in second place.

  14. - Randy de Puniet is off now as well, at exactly the same point as Crutchlow - and Cal has to jump out of the way to make sure not to get hit by the skidding bike and rider!

  15. 12/20 Cal Crutchlow goes off! The British rider loses is totally while breaking into the first turn and he slides off at pretty much full speed over the track and grass onto the gravel.

  16. - Lorenzo is trying to stay in touch, but with the amount of spray coming his way now he's not looking comfortable. He can't back off too much - Stoner is not that far behind - but he'll sure not risk going off by challenging.

  17. 11/20 Pedrosa close in on Lorenzo once again as the two come down the straight - and this time Pedrosa goes past on the inside! Both bikes slip and slide around at the back as they try to attack and defend around the turn.

  18. - Dovizioso goes off! While trying to catch Stoner he pushes too hard into turn seven, and he slides off into the gravel. He'll get back on and try to restart, but he'll be out of the podium fight now.

  19. - No change at the front, Pedrosa still all over the back of Lorenzo but not making a move.

  20. 10/20 Spies got high-sided and went off - yet another disastrous race for the American, who has had a torrid season.

  21. - Ben Spues has gone out! The American has gone out from 10th place and he's holding his wrist in agony.

  22. 9/20 Pedrosa still trying to do no more than bug Lorenzo to elicit a mistake, getting as close in as he can repeatedly but still not trying to go past despite the track drying out a little.

  23. 8/20 Dovizioso is close in on Stoner, now, the Aussie's comfortable gap in third having been closed to just three tenths. With Rossi on Dovizioso's heels as well this is a terrific tussle for the third podium spot.

  24. - Pedrosa tries to get close on start of the straight, but he can't get in close enough to have a look or make trouble.

  25. 7/20 The gap between Pedrosa and Stoner is up over six seconds now - as it has been for the last few months, there are only two men in the race and the championship.

  26. 6/20 Lorenzo is still putting in a great rid, ballsy stuff considering how much he has to lose by pushing hard - but Pedrosa is still all over him.

  27. 5/20 Jorge Lorenzo is hanging on, but Pedrosa seems happy to sit behind him trying to make him nervous - he knows full well that Lorenzo forced into a mistake is much more valuable to him than Lorenzo ceding first place, especially with Stoner now four seconds adrift in third.

  28. - Cal Crutchlow had a bad start but has clawed his way back up to ninth. Rossi still fifth behind Dovizioso, Bradl is sixth, Hayden seventh.

  29. 4/20 Pedrosa is a lot quicker in that final sector - and he's caught right up again on Lorenzo! He's right on his rear tyre down the straight, and though he doesn't attack this looks like being a great battle already.

  30. - This is a great response from Lorenzo to Pedrosa closing in on him - he's extended the gap back to 0.8 in the first two sectors...

  31. 3/20 Lorenzo had pulled over a second clear, but Pedrosa puts in a quickest lap there and the gap is back just inside half a second. Stoner is a long way behind the leading two now.

  32. - Dovizioso is making up for that bad start - he's taken Bradl, and with a softer tyre than Rossi he comes through into fourth place. Rossi can't stay with him round turn six.

  33. - Rossi goes past Bradl at turn two and Stoner will be in his sights next - but the gap from fourth to third is a good half a second.

  34. 2/20 Lorenzo pulling away at the front but Pedrosa doing a great job of staying in touch - Stoner is miles back already.

  35. - Stefan Bradl up to four already and Valentino Rossi comes up into fifth - no surprise to see Rossi shine in these conditions.

  36. 1/20 And they're off! Awful start from Dovizioso third on the grid - Lorenzo away cleanly to lead, Pedrosa second, Casey Stoner third.

  37. - Pedrosa has gone for the hard rear compound, gambling on not needing a tyre change. Lorenzo is on the soft, and will almost certainly have to come in...

  38. - The riders are out for the parade lap now, and though the rain has stopped there is still a lot of water on the track. It'll be slippery out there, and tyre change strategy will be incredibly important.

  39. - Lorenzo knows that he can finish second to Pedrosa for the remainder of the season and still win the title - but he will want to win to earn more breathing space. Rider standings

  40. - Jorge Lorenzo took pole once again ahead of Dani Pedrosa, and the two title rivals look set to enjoy another cracking battle today. Lorenzo claims pole

  41. - The start has been delayed due to a heavy rainstorm at Sepang, and it's been declared a wet race - as the track dries riders will be allowed to change to slick rubber at any time during the race.
