Birmingham is one of the most popular cities in the UK, which is why thousands of people relocate here every year.
Thanks to career opportunities, a brilliant and vibrant city centre, and top universities, Brum is an appealing location for many.
This means that the city is continually evolving with new people, new culture and new sounds. But the Brummie accent is still thriving across the city.

Residents in the West Midlands grew up in school hearing it, and it was made popular worldwide thanks to the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, UB40, Jasper Carrott and the Peaky Blinders series.
Yes, the Birmingham accent may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s one of the most distinctive dialects in the UK, and Brummies are proud of their defining accent.
But, of course, not everyone in the city has a Birmingham accent. So where exactly are you most likely to hear a classic Brummie accent?
We asked you on our Facebook page - and the answers were great. Here are twelve places you’re likely to hear a Brummie accent:
Villa Park was mentioned a number of times by our readers. Birmingham’s most successful club represent a large proportion of the city and you’ll definitely hear the Brummie accent in and around Villa Park on matchdays.

Step into a number of pubs in and around the city centre which will of course be occupied by Brummies.

Small Heath is of course known for being the home of Birmingham City and where the Peaky Blinders operated in the early 1900s. Another neighbourhood which was mentioned numerous times by our readers
Brummies have been known to head to our nearest beach when the weather has been very hot. Our reader Tundie described it as ‘Birmingham by the sea’.
What about outside the city? Well, plenty of Brummies live in Stratford and Lichfield. Valerie said: “Stratford-upon-Avon and Lichfield, due to the Brummies who moved there in the 60’s.”
Erdington was formerly home to the famous rock music venue, Mothers which hosted bands such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and The Who. Our reader David said it’s one of the city neighbourhoods you’re likely to hear a proper Brum accent. He wrote: “Brummie? That would be Erdington.”
Alum Rock was also mentioned a number of times by our readers. Speaking about the inner-city area, Paul said: “My parents both came from there. My Dad’s brother - obviously my uncle - when I was a kid I couldn’t make head nor tail of what he was saying or his mates from The Saltley Amateur Gardner’s Club - it was a completely different language.”
