Lewis Hall's incredible rise took another huge step forward on Thursday night when he won his first senior England cap. The Newcastle United defender was introduced as a half-time substitute for the injured Ezri Konsa and put in an assured performance at left-back to help the Three Lions to a 3-0 Nation's League win.

It's been a steep learning curve for the defender, who joined United on a permanent deal from Chelsea in the summer after spending last season on loan at St James' Park. First-team opportunities were perhaps harder to come by than he had hoped in his first year on Tyneside, but the 20-year-old has made the left-back spot his own this term.

After battling with Lloyd Kelly for a starting place in the early stages of the season, Hall has been a regular starter since his half-time introduction at Fulham, starring in the wins over Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and his former side Chelsea in the Carabao Cup. That form led England interim boss Lee Carsley to promote him to the senior international squad after more impressive performances for the Under-21s.

He could even be in line to make his first start for the national side in Sunday's game with Ireland at Wembley, but the Newcastle star has already made history this week.

As tweeted by Opta, Hall became the youngster United player to play for England in a competitive game for 120 years. The last Newcastle player to feature for England who was younger than Hall was Jock Rutherford, who played in 1904 aged 19.

Reflecting on his debut, and potential future chances with England short of left-backs, Hall said: "Personally, I'm just lost for words really. Sometimes it's difficult in football to really understand what happens until down the line.

"Everything happens so quickly they don't really get time to sit there and take it all in. At some point I'm going to have to do that, but, yeah, I'm really happy for tonight.

"There are not many left-backs but I'm just trying to take everything game by game and keep trying to play well for England whenever I get the opportunity and keep playing well for Newcastle whenever I'm playing as well. If I continue to do that then I'll be in a good position."
