15-Year-Old Julia Lipnitskaya Wins First Gold at Sochi: A Russian Star is Born [PHOTOS]

Rusiia's Julia Lipnitskaya has come up as a budding star of women's figure skating at the 22nd Winter Olympics being held in Sochi.

The 15-year-old Lipnitskaya has helped Russia win its first gold medal at the Sochi Olympics in the team figure skating, ahead of teams from Canada (silver) and the United States (bronze).

Lipnitskaya's extraordinary free skate in the figure skating team competition got herself a standing ovation and spectator were left mesmerised at the Iceberg Skating Palace.

The teenage Russian prodigy debuted at Olympics with an enchanting performance that had the crowd roaring her name.

"In practice I was warned the screams would be loud and the music would not be audible so I was prepared. But I did not think that it would be quite so loud. Luckily it helped me," Lipnitskaya told journalists, according to Reuters.

Lipnitskaya's phenomenal free skate gave Russia a six-point lead over Canada, giving the first-time host of Olympics its first gold medal.

"I have probably never felt as calm as I did tonight. I'm shocked myself. I travelled a bit at the end of my final spin but I will correct it in the free skating," she said.

From the Team Russia, Julia Lepnitskaia and the 2006 Olympic champion Evgeny Plyushchenko were crowned the winners, while ice dancing pair Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov came in third place.
