It only seems like yesterday since we were in the cut and thrust of the summer transfer window. But as the sights and sounds of Christmas edge ever closer, the opening of the winter window is looming large.

We're just over 40 days away from New Year's Day and that means a manic month of trading for clubs up and down the leagues. It will be no different for Leeds United.

It will be fascinating to see how many signings the Whites make in January as they aim to seal a Premier League return. A new attacking player looks on the cards, but Daniel Farke may look to bring in more reinforcements to bolster their automatic promotion prospects.

Here is everything you need to know about the window:

When does the window open?

The Whites, currently third in the second tier of English football, will be able to crack on with their business from the moment Big Ben chimes midnight, and the first firework lights up the London skyline on New Year's Day. In total, clubs will have 34 days to get their business done and dusted.

And when does it shut?

The window will close for business on Monday, February 3 at 11pm. It comes just over 48 hours after United's home clash with relegation-threatened Cardiff City.

What about loan deals?

Loan deals tend to have break clauses in them. This enables the player, along with the two clubs, to reassess the loan and decide whether or not they want it to continue.

There has been some talk of the Whites terminating Manor Solomon's loan. The Israel international has struggled to make a big impact since joining United on a temporary basis from Tottenham Hotspur.

Solomon and Joe Rothwell are the only players in the Whites' squad taking up loan slots. English Football League stipulate up to five loan players can be included in a matchday squad.

Squads must be submitted to the EFL within a week of the window closing, with the league then publishing those squad lists and making them public. As is normal, clubs are able to sign free agents outside the transfer period.

Did United do much business in the last January window?

Very little. Wales international Connor Roberts represented their only new face. He was drafted in loan from Burnley but failed to force his way into the starting XI on a regular basis.

Some fans were left disappointed by the lack of new additions. Their promotion rivals, Ipswich Town, were far busier, bringing in Lewis Travis, Jeremy Sarmiento, Ali Al-Hamadi and Kieffer Moore. Leicester City won the title and the Tractor Boys pipped Farke's team to the second automatic promotion spot.
