4 things that will 'definitely' happen if Mohamed Salah signs a new Liverpool contract
Liverpool is flying in both the Premier League and the Champions League at the moment but there are still some urgent things to tick off the to-do list: namely, signing Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk down to new contracts.
Liverpool has supposedly now tabled an offer to all three players, with reports emerging about Salah over the weekend — a couple of weeks after he publicly expressed his frustrations with negotiations. It was claimed by the Sunday Mirror that an agreement had been reached while The Athletic suggests an opening offer has been sent to his representatives.
As things stand, on January 1 — now just 23 days away — Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk can all agree terms with clubs abroad ahead of next summer. Here, Liverpool.com has taken a look at what might happen if Salah pens an extension.

Liverpool handed major boost
There are no two ways about it: as well as the relief for Liverpool fans that a new deal was done, there would be celebrations at being able to see arguably the best player in the world at the moment at Anfield for longer than just the rest of the season. In the dressing room, there should be plenty to celebrate too.
Considering the state that Arne Slot's side finds itself in on the pitch, in a strong position in each of the competitions that it is involved in, further adding to the feel-good factor can only be a good thing. Salah's song will definitely get more airings in the game that follows a possible extension being announced.
Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold knock-on?
As well as Salah, there is also Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold to think about. Liverpool will need to do one contract before it can agree on something with the other two, and the order could be important.
Whoever goes first could set the bar to some degree in terms of expectations on things like salary and contract length. But for that to happen, someone has to become the marker for the others to take their positions from.
That's why things are so complicated with sporting director Richard Hughes inheriting a far from ideal situation. Doing all three mega contract negotiations at the same time is a substantial challenge.
Transfer impact for 2025
While fans love transfers, trying to find a winger who scores and creates as regularly as Salah would be almost impossible. By signing up its number 11 to an extension, Liverpool would, in all likelihood, be avoiding the need to sign another wide forward next summer.
Slot has six senior attackers to choose from at the moment with Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo in great form and Ben Doak doing well on loan. Adding a seventh would not be a priority so signing someone in that department should only happen if someone leaves.
Jamie Carragher made the argument this week that Darwin Nunez could be sacrificed if an upgrade can be found while Diogo Jota has a tendency to pick up injuries. If Salah stays, perhaps a number nine could be identified. If the Egyptian goes, all of the focus will have to be on somehow replacing him — something it would obviously be hugely beneficial to avoid.

Slot press conference change
Quite rightly, Liverpool head coach Slot has been asked about the contract situations a lot this season. He has even taken to joking about the first question at press conferences always being about that lately — even if the answer is always the same.
That is because it is clearly a big story. Slot described Salah as a "special" player after the Reds' draw at Newcastle United, in which the African scored twice and assisted the other goal. Getting to work with the 32-year-old for longer into his Anfield tenure is surely something that the Dutchman would relish.
If Salah signs before Van Dijk or Alexander-Arnold, the question might then switch to being about the other two players. The bottom line is, though, it is a massive story that the trio have been allowed to reach this stage of their deals.
Losing any of them — let alone for nothing — would be a major blow. At the same time, announcing that they have extended their terms would be a boost of a similar magnitude at a time when most things seem to be going very well.
