49ers schedule 2017: San Francisco gets treated to needed breaks

Low expectations could make this a successful season for the 49ers.

The 49ers' 2017 schedule is one of the NFC's most favorable for their first regular season with Kyle Shanahan as coach and John Lynch as general manager. With low preseason expectations, this season is all about improving and potentially climbing out of the NFC West basement.

Although at a glance San Francisco gets breaks with fellow last-place teams in the AFC South, their own division and the NFC East balances that out for another well below-.500 outlook.

49ers schedule 2017

September

Week 1: vs. Panthers (Sunday, Sept. 10, 4:25 p.m ET, FOX)

Week 2: at Seahawks (Sunday, Sept. 17, 4:25 p.m. ET, FOX)

Week 3: vs. Rams (Thursday, Sept. 21, 8:25 p.m. ET, NFL Network)

Getting Cam Newton and Russell Wilson in consecutive games to open is rough on that rebuilding defense. The Niners will need that home win badly against Los Angeles to save some face.

October

Week 4: at Cardinals (Sunday, Oct. 1, 4:05 p.m. ET, FOX)

Week 5: at Colts (Sunday, Oct. 8, 1 p.m. ET, FOX)

Week 6: at Redskins (Sunday, Oct. 15, 1 p.m. ET, FOX)

Week 7: vs. Cowboys (Sunday, Oct. 22, 4:05 p.m. ET, FOX)

Week 8: at Eagles (Sunday, Oct. 29, 1 p.m. ET, FOX)

This where San Francisco needs to make hay away from the Bay to try to boost that record a bit to stop resembling 2016. The good news is their road games here are against fellow non-playoff teams. The bad news is that lone home date against Dallas can't get more brutal.

November

Week 9: vs. Cardinals (Sunday, Nov. 5, 4:05 p.m. ET, FOX)

Week 10: vs. Giants (Sunday, Nov. 12, 4:25 p.m. ET, FOX)

Week 11: bye

Week 12: vs. Seahawks (Sunday, Nov. 26, 4:05 p.m. ET, CBS)

The 49ers shouldn't plan on much fun during this short month, but hey, at least they get to enjoy a bye late.

December

Week 13: at Bears (Sunday, Dec. 1, 1 p.m. ET, CBS)

Week 14: at Texans (Sunday, Dec. 10, 1 p.m. ET, FOX)

Week 15: vs. Titans (Sunday, Dec. 17, 4:25 p.m. ET, CBS)

Week 16: vs. Jaguars (Sunday, Dec. 24, 4:05 p.m. ET, CBS)

Week 17: at Rams (Sunday, Dec. 31, 4:25 p.m. ET, FOX)

This month is critical for San Francisco to build some momentum for 2018. Every game except that long trip to Houston is very winnable. This is where Shanahan and Lynch's young corps need to play hard and come through with a few strong overall performances.

49ers schedule 2017, record prediction: 5-11

That's a modest projection that the Niners will mine more than twice as many wins as they had last season. As Shanahan needs to wait a little for Lynch to gather some solid all-around talent, that will be a better accomplishment than you think.
