49ers sign former Cowboys G Cooper

The San Francisco 49ers signed guard Jonathan Cooper to a one-year deal, the team announced Tuesday.

Cooper, 28, started 13 games at left guard for the Dallas Cowboys last season, and will compete for a gig with the 49ers.

"Having started 27 games in four NFL seasons, Jonathan brings great experience to the interior of our offensive line," general manager John Lynch said in a statement. "We look forward to him competing for a starting job at guard, while also bringing a veteran presence to our locker room. Jonathan is a welcome addition to our team."

Cooper was the seventh overall selection of the 2013 NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He was traded to the New England Patriots in March 2016 but never played in a game for the Patriots and was released seven months later.

The Cleveland Browns picked him up and he played in five games for them before again being released in December.

Cooper then signed with the Cowboys and enjoyed the best season of his career but suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee in the season finale. He underwent surgery and is expected to be fine by the start of training camp.

Overall, Cooper has played in 42 NFL games (27 starts). He didn't see any action in 2013 after breaking his left fibula in a preseason game.
