5 fashion trends from Couture Week that you can easily add to your wardrobe this season

Paris Fashion Week’s are the perfect time to give your wardrobe a seasonal makeover, though it may seem that haute couture week is for the maximalists who incorporate avant-garde experimentation into their everyday wardrobe.

Of course, this week certainly lived up to its surrealist reputation (notably Schiaparelli’s Lion Heads and Viktor and Rolf epic upside down dresses), there were plenty of trends we at Hello! Fashion spotted that you can easily add to your sartorial shopping list – an experimentalist or not.

Elie Saab SS23 couture

Forget Y2K, this couture week we’ve rewound to Victorian England with a plethora of ruffled collars and voluminous necklines. Valentino, Elie Saab and Armani Prive are amongst those who created emphasised necklines using layers of fabric and corsage ornamentation. Opt for a blouse or dress with an obscure collar to add some interest to your wardrobe.

Lime, Lemon or Orange? Whatever your favourite citrus fruit, wearing the same colour will keep you on trend heading into Summer 2023. Last year’s favourite pink shades also ran throughout couture week, but Alexandre Vauthier, Zuhair Murad and Miss Sohee’s take on these cheerful hues instantly caught our attention.

Valentino couture SS23

After seeing Selena Gomez’s stunning balloon-sleeved Valentino dress at The Golden Globe awards, we’ve been keeping an eye out for voluminous sleeves. The Italian fashion house wasn’t the only brand to bring the style to Paris this week. Iris Law walked for Alexandre Vauthier taking ‘balloon’ to new heights with some major black velvet sleeves, and Giambatista Valli created the ultimate feminine silhouettes with oversized shoulders. A dramatic-sleeved midi-dress (maybe not quite this dramatic) will be perfect for making a statement at summer weddings.

Metallic Jacquard

Fendi couture SS23

Perhaps the surge in metallic-dressing last year provoked designers to begin the return of shiny jacquard for 2023. Christian Dior’s Josephine Baker-inspired show brought iridescent gold and black midi dresses with matching shoes, two piece suits and tailored jackets; Fendi brought the ultimate high-neck fitted gown with a train, and jacquard-style pieces made their way though Ronald Van Der Kemp’s sustainable couture show.

Though Issey Miyake started off the menswear shows with a geometric phenomenon highlighting its signature pleating, this was a tailored technique that fed through to womenswear week, too. Thought Miu Miu’s 90s mini-skirt was so 2022? Think again.

Chanel’s signature tweed two-piece suits were adapted to create box-pleated skirts cut as minis; Dior’s 1920s themed show hit the nail on the head with pleated jacket and midi skirt two pieces, and Jean Paul Gaultier made a case for high waisted cigarette trousers with some major volume. If you’ve got some in your wardrobe already, you’re bang on trend.
