Harry Kane scored his second hat-trick in a row as Tottenham Hotspur finished off their season in style by thrashing Hull City 7-1.

Ben Pearce was on hand to discuss five talking points from the match.

No let-up from Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham had less than three days to recover from their previous outing against Leicester on Thursday night and, after that match, Spurs’ manager said: “Maybe players that were on the bench, maybe they have the opportunity to play against Hull.”

There was little rotation for today’s match though and the only two changes probably strengthened the line-up, as Kieran Trippier and Christian Eriksen replaced Moussa Sissoko and Mousa Dembele. Hugo Lloris even shook off a knee injury to take his place in the side.

If Hull were hoping to face a weakened and experimental Spurs side in their final Premier League match before their drop into the Championship, they were disappointed — as perhaps were Spurs’ reserve players, such as Vincent Janssen and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou.

Kyle Walker, who is the source of much speculation, was also conspicuous by his absence from the squad – although Pochettino has stated the England international has been struggling with an ankle injury this week.

Trippier gets another two assists, overtaking Walker

It is in games such as these that Spurs seem eminently capable of continuing their progress without Walker.

With the visitors utterly dominant, Trippier was able to focus entirely on attacking, and it took just 13 minutes for him to set up Harry Kane’s second goal.

The move was a familiar one as Eric Dier sent an angled chip in behind the Hull rearguard, and Trippier delivered a first-time volleyed cross which gave Kane a simple tap-in.

He went on to set up another goal in the final minutes, sending the ball to the back post, where Toby Alderweireld finished at close range.

The 26-year-old has now contributed six assists for Spurs this season – one more than Walker – despite starting half as many matches in all competitions (18 compared to 36).

The concern is at the other end of the field, especially against the top sides. In his previous match, Trippier was too easily beaten by Anthony Martial when Manchester United scored their goal.

Walker has more experience of facing that calibre of opponent, with England as well as Tottenham, and his pace is a real asset defensively as well as going forward.

Nonetheless, Trippier’s dangerous display today will provide a measure of comfort if Walker does indeed move on this summer.

Kane wastes no time in securing the Golden Boot and ends up with another hat-trick

The Spurs striker turned a two-goal deficit into a two-goal lead at the top of the Premier League goalscoring chart on Thursday – and he was on a mission again this afternoon.

Aided by a very accommodating Hull side and his team-mates, who looked for him an every opportunity, Kane opened the scoring in the 11th minute and struck again just two minutes later before wrapping up his second hat-trick in three days in the second half.

That took him to 29 goals in the top flight this term and he has retained the Golden Boot despite playing 725 fewer minutes than runner-up Romelu Lukaku.

The award for the goalkeeper who keeps the most clean sheets in the Premier League is rarely given as much publicity as the race for the Golden Boot.

However, Lloris arrived in Hull with a chance to share that prize with Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois, starting the day one shut-out behind the Belgian.

His bid for a measure of personal glory received a boost when Courtois conceded inside three minutes of today’s match against Sunderland.

Lloris just needed to keep Hull out to draw level at the top of the list, and that seemed a foregone conclusion for much of a one-sided game at the KCOM Stadium as the Tigers struggled to get any sort of foothold.

But, having conceded between the 59th and 71st minutes in each of their three previous matches against West Ham, Man United and Leicester, Spurs switched off again in a similar period.

There were a couple of warning shots from Oumar Niasse and, eventually, Sam Clucas struck in the 66th minute after Jan Vertonghen lost the ball inside his own half.

Spurs’ defenders looked hugely disappointed as they picked themselves off the turf inside their penalty box.

However, it does feel like Tottenham’s players put rather more effort into getting Kane his Golden Boot than securing Lloris’ award.

Hull had clearly missed the lesson from Leicester’s 6-1 defeat on Thursday – when Spurs have taken their foot off the gas, be grateful and don’t do anything to annoy them.

After conceding at the King Power Stadium in midweek, the Lilywhites went on to score four times, and they did so again today, this time triumphing 7-1.

Victor Wanyama headed in, Kane completed his treble and Ben Davies netted with a 20-yard rocket before Alderweireld tapped home at the back post.

Spurs finished last season with two draws and two defeats, including that embarrassing 5-1 loss at already-relegated Newcastle.

This time they have ended the campaign with 13 wins from 15 games, and the aggregate score across the last two is 13-2.

That’s how to finish the season on a high. Indeed, Pochettino, his players and the fans probably wish they could keep on playing.
