£60m playmaker told he would be ‘mad’ to reject Newcastle advances despite Tottenham, Man City links
Former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie insists Leicester playmaker James Maddison would be ‘mad’ to turn down a move to Newcastle United this summer.
Maddison’s current contract at the King Power Stadium runs out in the summer of 2024 and there are growing rumours that the England international wants to quit the Foxes at the end of this season.
For their part, Leicester are still trying to convince the 26-year-old to extend his stay. However, they are not expected to hesitate in selling, if Maddison continues to push towards an exit.
Both Tottenham and Manchester City have been linked with a move for the attacking midfielder. But McAvennie believes Maddison should opt for a move to St James’ Park over the other two clubs, with Eddie Howe on the brink of taking the Magpies to a different level.
When asked who of the three clubs Maddison should choose, McAvennie told Football Insider: “I would go to Newcastle.
“He’d play all the time, they are on a journey. I think they will make Europe this year that is for sure.
“They did not know if they were going to be in the league last year. I did not think they would beat Man United but it is the first step, they have got to a final.
“It is a journey I think it would be mad not to go there. He would love it there as well. They are going to buy again and they are going to be better and better and it will not be long before they win a cup.”
Newcastle are back in action on Saturday when they head to Manchester City in the Premier League.
