Aaron Rodgers throws only his third career pick six, and his second in Tampa

Aaron Rodgers almost never throws pick sixes. But when he does, more often than not, they occur in Tampa, Florida.

Rodgers entered Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 6,200 passes — and only two career pick sixes.

Sunday, he threw his third-ever interception run back for a touchdown — and his first INT of any kind during the 2020 season.

Jamel Dean just jumped the pass intended for Davante Adams and housed it. It’s not clear if Rodgers thought Adams was supposed to be doing something else on the play.

And then — amazingly — Rodgers almost threw a second pick six. Watch:

It’s now Rodgers’ first two-INT game since 2017. The Bucs took a 14-10 lead after converting the second pick into a TD.

Rodgers’ (very limited) pick six history

His first ever came in Tampa Bay in 2009, when Buccaneers safety Tanard Jackson returned an interception for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter of a Packers’ loss.

Dean made it Rodgers’ second one in Tampa.

For historical context, Rodgers’ former Green Bay Packers teammate — Brett Favre — is the NFL’s all-time leader with 31 pick sixes. Dan Marino (29) and Joe Namath (28), two other Pro Football Hall of Famers, rank 2-3 on the list.

Tom Brady, Rodgers’ opponent on Sunday, has 16 in his career — on 10,184 pass attempts (entering Sunday).

Rodgers has had a few other close calls over the years, such as one called back against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 of the 2017 season and a near-miss in the NFC title game at Chicago in the 2010 season.

But for the most part, he’s avoided one of football’s worst plays with uncanny efficiency. Here was the last pick six Rodgers threw, back in 2017 against the Bengals:
